Identity

Château Escot is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Lesparre-Médoc, in the Gironde department. It is currently owned by Czech investors, notably Richard Moravek, via the companies Readstone Real Estate and Good Wine Lover. General management is overseen by Sonia Ozanne. The estate was previously classified as Cru Bourgeois and is now aiming for the Cru Bourgeois Supérieur classification.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Escot dates back to the 18th century with the construction of the château. The origin of its name is believed to come from a former owner who was a tax collector, or 'ramasseur d'écot'. Remains of Gallo-Roman occupation bear witness to an ancient presence on these lands.

In 1991, Hubert Rouy acquired the property. His son, Bruno Rouy, joined the estate in 2004 and took charge of vinification. In 2019, the estate was taken over by Czech investors, marking a new chapter for Château Escot. This acquisition was accompanied by a project to renovate the château and modernise the winemaking facilities, aiming to develop wine tourism and revitalise the vineyard. The estate is committed to an environmentally friendly approach and is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE).

Appellations

Château Escot produces wines under the Médoc, AOC Bordeaux sec, and AOC Bordeaux rosé appellations. Château ESCOT Cru Bourgeois is a cuvée that has been promoted to Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.

Practical information

Château Escot is open to the public for tastings and cellar-door sales. Opening hours are as follows: from 2 January to 30 April, Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; from 4 May to 30 September, Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; and from 1 October to 30 December, Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Languages spoken at the estate include French, German, English, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese. The estate holds the Vignobles et Découvertes label and accepts payment by card, cheque, and cash. An on-site shop, drive-through, takeaway sales, delivery services, and Wi-Fi are available.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Escot vineyard covers an area of 30 hectares, of which 0.89 hectares are dedicated to white wine production. It is spread across two distinct Médoc terroirs: one located in Saint-Christoly, characterised by gravel mounds over limestone, and the other in Lesparre-Médoc, composed of sandy-gravel soils.

The grape varieties for red wines are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), complemented by Merlot (30%). For the white wine, the blend comprises 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Gris, and 25% Sémillon. The estate features many old vines, particularly on the Saint-Christoly terroir. Approximately 40% of the vineyard has been replanted.

Flagship cuvées

The Château Escot range notably includes Château ESCOT MÉDOC CRU BOURGEOIS, a still red wine. This blend is historically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is characterised by a structure that gives it good cellaring potential.

The estate also offers Château ESCOT Blanc, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Sémillon. This wine was awarded a gold medal at the Terre de Vins wine competition in 2024. The estate also produces other cuvées such as CHATEAU LE PRIVERA LE TERTRE, LES SORBIERS ESCOT, FORÊT ESCOT, and TRÉSOR ESCOT, alongside a rosé wine.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification of the red wines involves an ageing process that combines stainless steel vats and oak barrels. Annual production of the main red cuvée is around 60,000 bottles.
