Château Haut Surget

Identity

Château Haut-Surget is a winegrowing estate based in the commune of Néac, in Gironde. Owned by the Ollet-Fourreau family, it is managed by Jean-Pierre Fourreau. Patrick Fourreau serves as cellar master and vineyard manager. For winemaking consultancy, the estate collaborates with Hubert De Bouard and Philippe Nunes of Hubert De Bouard Consulting.

History and philosophy

The story of Château Haut-Surget is that of a family estate established in the 1930s, when Paul Ollet founded the property. Since then, the Ollet-Fourreau family has handed it down through five generations. Today, Marie-Claude Fourreau, Patrick Fourreau, along with the younger generation Emma and Tom, represent the various generations active at the estate. Château Haut-Surget is committed to sustainable viticulture, certified HVE 3.

The appellations

Château Haut-Surget produces wines across several appellations. The estate's main cuvée is crafted in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. The estate also produces wines in the Pomerol, Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, and Crémant de Bordeaux appellations. Among the group's properties, Château du Grand Cardinal is in Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and Château Grand Moulinet in Pomerol. Another cuvée, Château Fleur Saint Espérit, is made under the Bordeaux appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Haut-Surget vineyard covers an area of approximately 38 to 40 hectares, entirely dedicated to red wine production. The soils are characterised by clay-gravel. The average vine age is around 60 years. The grape varieties planted comprise 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet-Sauvignon.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers a range of wines crafted under different appellations. Château Haut-Surget is the flagship cuvée in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. Château Grand Moulinet is also one of the property's key labels, in the Pomerol appellation. In the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, Château du Grand Cardinal represents an important cuvée for the estate. Château Fleur Saint Espérit represents the Bordeaux appellation in their range. Another cuvée, Château Lafleur Vauzelle, is destined for mass retail.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out both by hand and mechanically. After picking, the grapes pass through two vibrating and blower sorting tables. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, with maceration lasting between 4 and 5 weeks. Ageing takes place over a one-year period in new oak barrels and one-wine barrels.
