Identity

Château Queyssard is an estate belonging to Vignobles Massé, managed by Nicolas Massé. The estate is located in Pompignac, in the Gironde département.

History and philosophy

The estate's history dates back to the 19th century with the construction of the château. The property was acquired in 1953 by Pierre and Micheline Massé. Francis Massé joined the estate in the 1980s. Nicolas Massé, representing the third generation, joined in 2012. The estate has evolved progressively, with the grubbing up of the last apple orchards in 2013 to focus entirely on viticulture. Vignobles Massé also manages other estates, notably Domaine de Terrefort Bibonne and Château Lagrave. Château Queyssard is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale).

Appellations

Château Queyssard produces wines under several appellations, including Bordeaux Supérieur, Entre Deux Mers, Bordeaux Clairet, Bordeaux Rosé, Bordeaux, and Saint Émilion.

The shop is open to visitors from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, and on Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Sundays. Tastings at the estate are available. Vignobles Massé also offers holiday cottage accommodation at Château Lagrave.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Queyssard vineyard spans a total surface area of 27 hectares. The soils across the vineyard are loamy. The grape varieties for red and rosé wines include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wines, the varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Key cuvées

Château Queyssard offers several cuvées:

• Château Queyssard Bordeaux Supérieur: This red wine is crafted from Merlot (70%), Cabernet Franc (20%), and Malbec (10%). Vinification is characterised by low-temperature fermentation with pump-overs.
• Château Queyssard Entre Deux Mers: This dry white wine is a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. The grapes are harvested at daybreak. Its vinification includes cold skin-contact maceration and slow alcoholic fermentation. Ageing is very short, and bottling takes place the spring following the harvest.
• Château Queyssard Cuvée Dorianne: A white wine produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested at slight over-ripeness. This wine is vinified in 300L barrels and aged for several months.
• Château Queyssard Bordeaux Clairet: A clairet wine crafted from 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc. Vinification involves a maceration of approximately 48 hours for a gentle extraction of colour, followed by liquid-phase fermentation. Ageing is very short, with bottling carried out in spring.
• Château Queyssard Bordeaux Rosé: A rosé wine made from 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc.

Vinification and ageing

For Château Queyssard red wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, vinification is carried out at low temperatures with vigorous pump-overs at the start of fermentation, followed by gentler extraction. White wines, such as Cuvée Dorianne, are vinified in 300L barrels and aged over several months. The Entre Deux Mers undergoes cold skin-contact maceration and slow alcoholic fermentation, followed by very brief ageing. Bordeaux Clairet undergoes a short maceration (around 48 hours) for gentle colour extraction, followed by liquid-phase fermentation and very short ageing.
