Identity

Château Quinault l'Enclos is a winegrowing estate whose vines are situated in the commune of Libourne, in the Gironde department. The property is overseen by Pierre Lurton, managed by Pierre-Olivier Clouet, with Pierre Polbos as cellar master and Guillaume Greil as vineyard manager.

History and philosophy

Château Quinault l'Enclos was acquired in 2008 by Bernard Arnault and Baron Frère, also owners of Château Cheval Blanc. This acquisition marked the estate's integration into the LVMH group. A comprehensive restructuring of the vineyard was undertaken in 2009.

The estate has committed to organic conversion across its entire vineyard.

Appellations

Château Quinault l'Enclos produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. The estate is also associated with the Montagne-Saint-Émilion appellation. Château Quinault l'Enclos has held Grand Cru Classé status since 2012.

Winemaking and ageing

The wine is aged in oak barrels, with 50% new oak renewed each year. The recommended serving temperature for the wine is between 16 and 18 °C.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Quinault l'Enclos vineyard covers 19 hectares. Characterised by gravelly and sandy-gravel soils, it is uniquely situated as an urban vineyard within Libourne. The vines have an average age of 40 years, and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand.

The estate's current grape varieties are predominantly Merlot (65%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (14%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (21%). From 2024, Malbec is expected to be incorporated into the blend.

Flagship cuvées

The estate's primary wine is Château Quinault l'Enclos, a red wine. The blend for this cuvée varies by vintage, predominantly combining Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. For instance, the 2021 vintage blend comprised 59% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, whilst the 2020 vintage consisted of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc. Average annual production ranges between 43,000 and 80,000 bottles. No Château Quinault l'Enclos was produced in 2013.
