Choosing wine from an independent winegrower in the Graves means embracing a philosophy. It is choosing authenticity, artisanal craft, and a direct, almost intimate connection with the person who tends the vines and crafts each bottle. At Château Cazebonne, we proudly champion this status and approach, which lie at the very core of our philosophy.
From planting young vines to bottling, we control every single step. This mastery allows us to ensure complete traceability and maintain uncompromising quality. We pay particular attention to vineyard work in organic and biodynamic viticulture, followed by low-intervention, gentle vinification in the cellar, in tune with the musts.
Far from fleeting trends or industrial standards, we follow our own philosophy. It is rooted in deep respect for the Graves terroir and an unrelenting quest for vibrant, honest wines that tell a story.
Our independence is our greatest strength, granting us the freedom to explore groundbreaking paths. It is what made our unique project of replanting Bordeaux’s forgotten grape varieties possible. We dare to cultivate and vinify rare varieties such as Mancin or Castets—grape varieties that, as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne explains in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", once formed the rich fabric of the local vineyard before gradually disappearing. Such boldness would be difficult to imagine within a larger, more conventional structure less inclined to take risks.
We foster an authentic relationship with our customers through cellar-door sales (by appointment), our online shop, and our presence at wine fairs. A genuine human connection for a deeply meaningful product.
A guarantee of authenticity: You are buying a wine with a soul, shaped by a person and a sense of place, not a standardised industrial product.
Discovering unique wines: Independent winegrowers often craft the most original and personal wines, looking beyond the conventional standards of the appellation to offer distinct aromatic profiles and novel structures.
Supporting sustainable agriculture: By choosing a Biodynamic Winegrower in the Graves committed to organic and biodynamic practices, you are supporting human-scale farming that respects its environment and creates value within its local area.
Château Cazebonne’s commitment as an independent winegrower is far from insignificant, especially in an emblematic appellation like Graves. For a long time, the Bordeaux model was dominated by the négoce, with growers selling their harvest to larger houses for winemaking and marketing. Yet, as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne highlights in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", the region’s viticultural history is also rich with numerous artisans who tended their own vines and made their own wines, often from grape varieties that have since fallen into obscurity. This heritage inspires us to revive authentic ties and closeness with our land and our wines.
Beyond mere production, being an independent winegrower in the Graves today also means making bold choices, particularly regarding the environment. This commitment to respectful viticulture, just like an organic winegrower in the Graves, helps preserve the biodiversity of our plots and allows the terroir to express itself fully. It also encompasses selecting well-adapted grape varieties—including heritage or resistant cultivars—to tackle climatic and disease challenges, an essential approach for many committed winegrowers in Bordeaux.
Château Cazebonne fully embodies this spirit of independence and commitment within Graves wines. Our project to revive Bordeaux's forgotten grape varieties is the fruit of this reclaimed freedom—a long-term endeavour made possible by the unwavering support of wine lovers who have embraced our wines. It is thanks to your trust that we can continue to innovate and preserve this precious viticultural heritage.
To delve deeper into the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to get the digital edition of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" published by Éditions BBD and written by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne. You can also test your knowledge and learn more about our philosophy with our wine quizzes, and discover our full range of cuvées in our online shop to offer tangible support to our project.
