The 2023 vintage in Bordeaux and, more specifically, in our Graves region, proved to be a year of challenges, but also of great promise. After a spring and early summer marked by intense downy mildew pressure, our vines benefited from a drier, warmer late season, essential for optimal ripening. For winemakers who worked meticulously, like us at Château Cazebonne, this points to high-quality, fruit-forward wines that can be enjoyed right away or cellared for around ten years.
The year 2023 demanded unwavering dedication from winegrowers. The battle against downy mildew in the spring required constant vigilance and considerable vineyard work, especially for organic and biodynamic estates such as Château Cazebonne. Only grapes in pristine condition were retained, which, while reducing yields, guarantees excellence. The drier, warmer late season then fostered optimal ripening of the berries, achieving a fine balance.
The weather conditions were particularly favourable to the aromatic expression of white grape varieties (Sauvignon, Sémillon, etc.), promising crisp, elegant, and fragrant wines that reflect the minerality of our Graves soils. For the reds, this beautiful late season allowed the grapes to achieve ideal phenolic ripeness, yielding wines with generous fruit, silky tannins, and a seamless balance between freshness and body.
The 2023 vintage is also a crucial milestone in evaluating the behaviour and potential of our forgotten grape varieties. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne explains in "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", these ancient varieties are true treasures of our viticultural heritage. Facing contrasting weather conditions provides deeper insight into their adaptability while revealing novel flavours. The winegrowers replanting forgotten varieties embody a commitment to heritage preservation and forward-thinking adaptation to future climate challenges. The year 2023 thus offers a unique opportunity to observe their resilience and expression on terroirs such as those of Cazebonne.
Every vintage brings its own share of surprises and distinctive features. The 2023 vintage, with its overcome challenges and aromatic promise, is shaping up to be an exciting year for Graves wines. Our white Graves wines should display great freshness and pronounced aromatic complexity, while our red Graves wines will offer power, fruit, and elegance. It is the perfect opportunity to discover authentic wines that reflect their terroir and the winegrowers' meticulous craftsmanship.
The work undertaken by Cazebonne to replant forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux is a long-term endeavour, made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who enjoy our wines.
