Found in Aperçu historique sur les vins de Graves: “It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that the Médoc began to establish its supremacy over the other wines of the Gironde; and it was the 1855 classification that established it to this day. In 1851, a dreadful outbreak of powdery mildew struck the Gironde, and, in a very particular manner, the Graves region. When, four years later, the classification took place, the ravaged land was left aside, and it is on the strength of this incomplete classification that the superiority of the Médoc still rests.” The Médoc wines had only very recent renown in 1855, whereas the wines of Graves were indisputably the most renowned a few decades earlier. The appearance of powdery mildew in Bordeaux certainly contributed significantly to excluding the Graves from the 1855 classification.
