The influence of asteriated limestone on the fine wines of Bordeaux

The genesis of asteriated limestone soils

Asteriated limestone terroirs trace their geological origins back to marine deposits formed millions of years ago. During the Tertiary period, the Bordeaux region was submerged beneath the sea, leading to the accumulation of marine sediments, notably the fossilised remains of small sea stars known as asterias. Consolidated over time, these deposits gave rise to remarkably distinct limestone rocks. This formation period is crucial to understanding the richness and complexity of today's vineyard soils.

Characteristics of asteriated limestone terroirs

Soils derived from asteriated limestone are distinguished by several features essential to viticulture. Their structure provides excellent drainage capacity, preventing excess water whilst retaining sufficient moisture for the vine even during dry spells. The presence of limestone tends to enhance the alcoholic strength of wines, whilst an associated proportion of clay can bring roundness and suppleness (Source 1). These terroirs, often demanding to work yet exceptionally favourable to the vine (learn more about wine geology), contribute to the finesse and minerality of the wines they produce. The white limestone of Castillon, for example, has an average thickness of 10 to 15 metres and extends east of Libourne, illustrating the scale of these geological formations (Source 2).

Geographical distribution of asteriated limestone soils

These exceptional terroirs are not uniformly distributed across the Bordeaux region. They are found notably on the plateaux of Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and the Côte de Castillon on the Right Bank, but also intermittently on the Left Bank, particularly in the Graves region. Around Bordeaux, near Blanquefort, or on the hillsides stretching from Bordeaux to Cadillac, coarse limestone formations, sometimes used as building quarries, also bear witness to this geological presence (Source 2). These soils, often combined with gravels—as at La Tour or Margaux, where the vines sink their roots into limestone or marly subsoils—impart distinctive qualities to the wines, such as smoothness, richness, and remarkable vigour with bottle age (Source 3).

Asteriated limestone at Château Cazebonne

At Château Cazebonne, we are fortunate to farm plots that benefit from these prized asteriated limestone terroirs, notably on our lieu-dit Darche. This terroir shares geological similarities with prestigious areas such as Barsac, renowned for the quality of their limestone soils. This geological feature imparts remarkable structure and complexity to our wines. The asterias of Darche bear direct witness to this natural wealth and to our commitment to respecting the terroir, as illustrated by our mindful approach to biodiversity and soil balance (fostering living soils). Limestone, through its ability to reflect light and regulate moisture, contributes to the optimal ripening of our grapes.
