Bouquet 3159-2-12 B is a white grape variety derived from the progeny of Chasan, developed as part of the extensive "Bouquet" collection. This series of varieties stands out for its natural tolerance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, the result of pioneering research conducted by Montpellier-based researcher Alain Bouquet. His innovative approach involved carrying out successive backcrosses exclusively with Vitis vinifera varieties, aiming to retain a vast majority of this species' genome and thereby guarantee outstanding organoleptic qualities, all stemming from an initial, highly resistant hybrid parent, NC6-15. After several generations, these varieties possess over 99% of the Vitis vinifera genome. To better understand the distinction between hybrid or vinifera varieties, the genome of resistant grape varieties provides valuable insights.
The development of these varieties is part of an effort to adapt viticulture to climatic and disease pressures. They have been subject to rigorous evaluations, particularly in Occitanie through the Oscar Oc experimental network, confirming their agronomical and oenological potential. In 2025, several Bouquet varieties, including Bouquet 3159, are expected to achieve definitive listing in the official catalogue, allowing winegrowers to plant them freely.
These innovations are vital for sustainable viticulture. To understand the significance of this work, it is worth looking into downy and powdery mildew-tolerant grape varieties and what they represent for the future.

Bouquet 3159-2-12 B is characterised by good productivity and ease of canopy management. Its vigour is considered medium, with a distinctly erect growth habit. These agronomic traits facilitate its integration into modern vineyard practices, especially for growers seeking to reduce plant protection treatments. The most notable attribute of this grape variety is its intrinsic tolerance to downy and powdery mildew, two major fungal diseases affecting the vine.
This tolerance enables a significant reduction in spray treatments, thereby contributing to more environmentally friendly viticulture and better cost management for the winegrower. Resistance to these diseases is a major asset in the current context of global warming and growing sustainability demands.
From an oenological perspective, Bouquet 3159-2-12 B is a promising white variety. The wines it produces are described as fine, well-balanced, and endowed with generous body. Some experts compare it to Chardonnay, although it can display a slightly more tannic character, lending it an appealing texture. It also offers a high content of glutathione, a natural antioxidant that contributes to the wine's stability and overall quality.
Its aromatic profile leans towards citrus notes complemented by an exotic touch. This variety is particularly well-suited to crafting accessible, fresh, and elegant wines, including lower-alcohol wines that cater to evolving consumer preferences.
Wines made from Bouquet 3159-2-12 B are distinguished by their freshness and elegance. On the nose, citrus aromas such as lemon or grapefruit can be perceived, enhanced by exotic nuances. On the palate, it delivers a fine balance, with a refined structure and pleasant mid-palate weight. The delicate tannic touch noted by some experts adds complexity and persistence, setting it apart from more traditional white grape varieties. It is an approachable, inviting wine ideal for spontaneous enjoyment across a wide range of sociable occasions.
At Château Cazebonne, we take a keen interest in the heritage grape varieties that once thrived in Bordeaux. We also plan to plant a few resistant varieties, notably from Alain Bouquet's collection, to observe their performance in the face of climate change.
