David explains the suckering work on this old Merlot vine
The task consists of removing all non-fruitful shoots from the vine, to concentrate the flow of sap on the grape bunches. This opens up the canopy and helps limit disease pressure.
One may also decide to leave a few well-positioned shoots for the following year's pruning wood. A task that therefore calls for a great deal of attention and thoughtful judgement.
