I want itLong-Tailed Tit
The Long-tailed Tit, scientifically known as Aegithalos caudatus, is a small passerine bird easily recognised by its distinctive silhouette and social behaviour. These graceful birds catch the eye with their lively nature and subtle colours.
This small bird is characterised by its round, fluffy body, adorned with shades of pink, white, and black. Yet what makes it truly unique is its disproportionately long tail—often longer than its body—which serves as a balance during its aerial acrobatics. They are rather diminutive in size, around 13–16 cm, of which a good half is comprised of the tail. They generally move in small family flocks.
At Château Cazebonne, Long-tailed Tits can be observed throughout the year, although their presence is most noticeable during the colder months when they actively forage for food. They typically nest in low shrubs or dense bushes, favouring areas where the vegetation provides both shelter and foraging opportunities.
These little acrobats make their home in the hedgerows and copses surrounding the estate's vineyard parcels. Their relentless flitting from branch to branch, accompanied by high-pitched calls, is a joyful indicator of a healthy ecosystem. They are frequently spotted in the hedges that delineate our plots and serve as vital ecological corridors, as well as right amongst the vines where they energetically seek their sustenance. The Kestrel, another resident of our vineyards, also contributes to this natural balance by keeping rodent populations in check.
The Long-tailed Tit plays a major ecological role. Voracious insectivores, they spend their days meticulously inspecting buds, leaves, and bark in search of aphids, caterpillars, and spider eggs. This ceaseless activity makes them invaluable allies in naturally regulating populations of insects that are potentially harmful to the vines, thereby reducing the need for human intervention.
Their interaction with the vineyard is therefore wholly beneficial. By acting as biological control agents, they help maintain a delicate equilibrium essential to vineyard health. Château Cazebonne's transition to viticultural agroecology and the complete elimination of pesticides since 2017 have fostered an environment in which they thrive, turning them into welcome, permanent residents. Their presence is a clear testament that our estate works in harmony with biodiversity. These birds in the vineyards, much like the Tit: an acrobatic and precious ally in the vines of Cazebonne or the Blackcap, reflect the rich wildlife of our terroir.
On the lands of Cazebonne, these "balls of feathers" provide a continuous spectacle. Their agile movements between branches, their constant communication through soft "tsirr-tsirr" calls, and their tireless quest for food in every nook and cranny of the vines illustrate the true effectiveness of an environmentally friendly viticultural approach. They are a vibrant symbol of the life teeming within our parcels and tangible proof that nature reclaims its rights in a biodynamically managed vineyard.
The long-term endeavour to restore biodiversity and revive heritage grape varieties, such as Castets, Mancin, or Saint Macaire, is an inspiring journey. To deepen your understanding of these resurrected varieties and Bordeaux's viticultural history, feel free to receive the digital edition of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" or test your knowledge with our wine quizzes, and discover our cuvées—the fruit of this passion and commitment—by visiting the Cazebonne shop.
