At Château Cazebonne, we are fortunate to host several species of tits, the most common being the Great Tit (Parus major), easily recognised by its black band and bright yellow breast, and the Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), with its azure-blue crown. These small birds, measuring around 11 to 14 cm, are familiar figures across the vineyard and precious allies in maintaining our biodiversity balance.
The life cycle of tits is closely intertwined with that of the vine. From early spring, as nature reawakens, the activity of these birds intensifies. They build their nests in tree cavities or nesting boxes and can produce up to two clutches a year, raising 6 to 12 chicks each time. This period of intense nutritional demand turns tits into tireless insect hunters.
The vineyards of Cazebonne provide an ideal habitat for tits thanks to our sustainable viticultural practices and our conversion to organic farming in 2017. The absence of synthetic insecticides and herbicides ensures an abundance of their primary food sources. We observe their constant presence in all our vineyard parcels, making full use of the surrounding hedgerows and trees for perching and nesting. The installation of dedicated nest boxes also encourages them to settle and breed, contributing to the diversity of birdlife in the vineyard.
The ecological role of tits is vital to the health of our vineyard. They are formidable natural predators whose diet consists mainly of caterpillars, aphids, and other invertebrates. They prove particularly effective against grapevine moths (eudémis/Lobesia botrana) and processionary caterpillars, which can cause significant damage to inflorescences and young berries. Their presence fosters natural pest control, thereby reducing our reliance on plant protection treatments.
The interaction between tits and the vine is overwhelmingly beneficial. By consuming substantial quantities of harmful insects, they protect young shoots and developing grape clusters, acting as natural sentinels and cleansers. This action contributes directly to the sanitary quality of our grapes and aligns seamlessly with our agroecological approach to viticulture. We observe no harmful impact whatsoever on their part; their appetite is focused exclusively on invertebrates.
In practice, at Château Cazebonne, the presence of tits is a clear indicator of biodiversity and environmental health. From the earliest morning light, they can be heard and seen flitting between the vine rows, inspecting every leaf and bud in search of food for their broods. Their vitality and growing numbers confirm that our efforts to build a balanced ecosystem are bearing fruit, making them an essential part of our farming philosophy and our daily observation of vineyard fauna.
At Château Cazebonne, this close collaboration with nature is part of a broader commitment to preserving our viticultural heritage. We are dedicated to reviving the history and richness of the Bordeaux vineyard by replanting forgotten grape varieties that were once the pride of our terroir, such as Castets, Mancin, and Saint Macaire. This long-term endeavour—a quest for authenticity and distinction—is made possible by the steadfast support of wine enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and share our vision. To deepen your knowledge of these revived varieties and the history of Bordeaux viticulture, feel free to download the digital edition of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages".
