I want itStarling
The Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), with its iridescent, metallic plumage, is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and ambivalent inhabitants of our vineyard at Château Cazebonne. While its song can sometimes sound cacophonic, its presence is a telling indicator of the renewed vitality within our ecosystem.
This medium-sized bird, measuring around 20 centimetres, is distinguished by its sleek silhouette and bright yellow bill during the breeding season, which turns brownish-black throughout the rest of the year. In summer, its plumage takes on darker tones, spangled with tiny white speckles that gradually fade as autumn approaches, giving way to dazzling green and purple sheens.
At Château Cazebonne, the starling’s life cycle is intimately intertwined with that of the vines. In spring and throughout summer, the starling is a precious ally for the winegrower. A voracious consumer of insects, it patrols the vineyard rows in flocks, probing the soil and canopy to hunt down grubs, caterpillars, aphids and other invertebrates. Its insectivorous diet makes it an invaluable natural predator, helping to regulate pest populations and protect our vines without the use of synthetic chemicals. It is largely thanks to Château Cazebonne’s conversion to organic farming in 2017 that these insect populations and their natural predators, such as the starling, can truly thrive.
Starlings are particularly fond of open landscapes dotted with trees, hedgerows and shrubs, which provide both shelter and food. Our plots and the surrounding landscape of Château Cazebonne, rich in biodiversity, provide an ideal habitat where they can nest and forage in peace. It is not uncommon to see them forming vast murmurations, particularly at dusk when they gather for the night.
The starling plays a fundamental ecological role as a regulator of insect populations, contributing to a natural balance within the vineyard ecosystem. Its varied diet also aids in seed dispersal, thereby promoting plant diversity.
However, the approach of harvest marks a turning point in the bird's behaviour. Its diet shifts progressively, and the starling, now a keen lover of fruit, turns into a formidable grape pilferer. Forming dense, sweeping flocks of several hundred individuals, starlings can inflict significant damage on ripe grape clusters, piercing berries and creating entry points for fungal diseases such as botrytis. This dual nature—part benefactor, part marauder—is an ongoing challenge for winegrowers committed to working in harmony with biodiversity.
Despite these challenges, the presence of the starling—alongside the more than 25 bird species identified by an ornithologist in October 2023—is a strong indicator of the rich biodiversity flourishing at Château Cazebonne. The transition away from synthetic chemicals has allowed life to return, from the soil to the skies, offering a wealth of varied habitats and resources. This natural abundance bears witness to the restored balance of our vineyard parcels and our commitment to sustainable viticulture.
