At the heart of the spectacular growth cycle of the vine at Château Cazebonne, a discreet yet essential feature catches our attention: tendrils. These slender, thread-like appendages, originating from axillary buds, are far more than mere decorative elements. They embody the vine's innate ability to cling, climb, and develop—acting like hands exploring their environment to draw strength and stability. In our Bordeaux vineyard, every tendril is a silent testament to the plant's determination to thrive, adapt to winds and climatic challenges, and direct its growth towards the nourishing rays of the sun.
The development of tendrils follows the exact rhythm of vegetative growth. From spring onwards, as young shoots elongate and leaves unfold, the tendrils emerge, already searching for support to cling to. This quest for support is vital for the vine, keeping it off the ground and encouraging better light interception for both leaves and bunches. At Château Cazebonne, observing these tendrils in full action means contemplating nature's intelligence—a lesson in biological engineering that reminds us of the importance of every detail in crafting our exceptional wines.
Tendrils are also a valuable indicator for the winegrower. Their strength and vitality reflect the overall health of the vine. They signal a well-balanced plant capable of structuring itself effectively, which is fundamental to ensuring optimal berry ripening. By coiling around trellising wires or neighbouring canes, they actively contribute to the formation of the canopy, that protective foliage sheltering the precious grapes. Thus, these modest filaments play a prominent role in the final quality of the fruit, directly influencing the aromatic richness and concentration of our future wines.
Tendrils are supporting organs for the vine—modified stems capable of curling around any support they encounter. This phenomenon is made possible by thigmotropism, the plant's ability to respond to physical contact. As soon as a tendril touches an object, it begins to coil, thereby reinforcing the vine's anchorage. This adaptation is the result of millions of years of evolution, allowing the vine, a natural liana, to climb towards the light and avoid ground-level competition. They are not merely physical supports; they are also central to its survival strategy and growth optimisation.
The development of tendrils is intrinsically linked to the vine's vegetative cycle. They appear in spring, shortly after budburst and the initial elongation of young shoots. Their growth is vigorous during the period of rapid shoot extension, constantly adapting in their search for support. Flowering and fruit set mark key stages where fully developed tendrils ensure the balance and stability of the plant. Once their anchoring role is fulfilled, the tendrils lignify and lose their coiling ability, turning into permanent woody structures that secure the architecture of the vine.
Beyond their mechanical role, tendrils are genuine indicators of vine health and vigour. Abundant and well-developed tendrils are often the sign of a balanced, healthy vine. Conversely, short, sparse, or misshapen tendrils may indicate water stress, nutrient deficiencies, or disease pressure. Careful monitoring enables the winegrower to adjust vineyard practices—from water management to nutrient applications—to foster optimal growth. They also directly influence proper canopy aeration, thereby reducing susceptibility to diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew.
At Château Cazebonne, we pay close attention to tendril management, which is essential for maintaining canopy architecture and wine quality. We prioritise methods that respect the vine's natural cycle. During suckering and shoot positioning (tucking-in), we ensure that tendrils can reach the designated trellis wires without coiling excessively around bunches or leaves, which could otherwise hinder airflow and sun exposure. Our approach is rooted in sustainable viticulture, where every intervention aims to bolster the plant's natural resilience.
A common misconception is that tendrils are merely superfluous, or even detrimental, appendages that should be systematically removed. In truth, their role is vital for supporting and balancing the vine, and excessive removal can weaken the plant. Another belief is that tendrils only reflect general vigour. While they are a good indicator of vine health, they are primarily the sign of an active search for structural support, rather than a sign of an excessively energy-greedy vine. In reality, they express a fundamental biological necessity: anchoring the vine to allow its canes to properly lignify and flourish.
At Château Cazebonne, we show a deep and ongoing commitment to reviving the historic grape varieties of Bordeaux. This work, rooted in tradition and research, enriches the diversity of our vineyard for the enjoyment of discerning wine lovers.
