Alain Breuille: a gardener-nurseryman at the heart of biodiversity

Based in Loubens, Alain Breuille has spent his life safeguarding varieties of peaches, nectarines, and clingstone peaches. Hundreds of varieties have thus been preserved, which without him would almost certainly have disappeared.
A true 'plant artisan', renowned for his passion and commitment to fruit tree biodiversity, his approach is rooted in the meticulous observation of nature.
The result of decades of experience, his work highlights fruit varieties adapted to local terroirs, hardy and capable of thriving without chemical inputs.
Many of the varieties he rediscovered have since been registered in the official catalogue of fruit trees under the name Collection Alain Breuille.

The Alain Breuille method

The uniqueness of Alain Breuille's approach is fully reflected in his work with peach trees. He does not merely propagate saplings; he carries out a rigorous selection of hardy, local varieties adapted to pedoclimatic conditions. His method is based on growing from seed (peach stones) for vigour and genetic diversity, allowing him to obtain a new variety every time.
The goal is clear: to cultivate healthy, resilient peach trees capable of thriving in harmony with their environment without requiring heavy intervention. This vision of respectful, self-sustaining agriculture is a constant source of inspiration for our own viticultural practices.

Why plant Alain Breuille's peach trees in our vineyard rows?

Integrating peach trees grown from seed by Alain Breuille into our vineyard plots is part of a broader commitment to agroecology in viticulture. This ancient practice, documented in historical writings on vineyards of the past, aims to enhance biodiversity and create a balanced vineyard ecosystem. Beyond fruit production, peach trees provide a complementary plant structure that encourages beneficial auxiliary fauna, contributes to better canopy aeration across the plots, and enriches soil life. This polyculture is another step towards the resilience of our estate and a tangible example of our commitment to biodynamic Bordeaux and biodiversity.

At Château Cazebonne, Alain Breuille’s work with peach trees embodies our philosophy: preserving the plant and viticultural heritage of Bordeaux. We are proud to contribute to the replanting of ancestral varieties and to promote respectful agriculture—an effort made possible by the support of wine lovers who enjoy our wines. To explore these themes further, we invite you to download our book “Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages”, test your knowledge with our wine quizzes, or discover our wines online, all born from this shared passion for living nature and terroir.
