Viticultural agroecology

Agroecology in viticulture: a commitment to ecosystem balance

Agroecology is a systemic approach to farming inspired by ecological principles to design resilient, environmentally friendly production systems. Far from being a mere technique, it is a genuine philosophy that places living systems at the heart of agricultural practices. At Château Cazebonne, this approach is intrinsically linked to our commitment to Organic and Biodynamic viticulture. It aims to cultivate the vine in harmony with its environment, recognising the vineyard as a complex ecosystem where every element, from the soil to beneficial fauna, plays an essential role.

The foundations of the agroecological approach

Agroecology is based on several key principles aimed at enhancing the autonomy and resilience of agricultural systems. It encourages biological diversity at all scales, from cultivated species to surrounding ecosystems. It also promotes cultural practices that foster soil health and fertility, considered the cornerstone of all healthy production. Finally, it seeks to minimise external inputs, whether synthetic fertilisers or plant protection products, by prioritising natural regulation mechanisms. The goal is to create agroecosystems capable of self-regulation and adapting to environmental challenges, such as global warming.

Applying agroecology in our vineyards

At Château Cazebonne, agroecology translates into a series of practical measures tailored to our Bordeaux terroir. We favour grassing down between rows with diverse cover crops that enrich biodiversity, improve soil structure, and attract natural predators. The presence of beneficial insects, such as ladybirds, helps control pests, thereby reducing our reliance on spray treatments. We also foster the growth of hedgerows and copses, true havens for wild flora and fauna, which act as ecological corridors and contribute to the richness of our landscape. Water management is optimised by these cultural practices, which increase water infiltration and reduce evaporation, preserving this precious resource. The use of biodynamic compost, prepared on-site, nourishes our soils and stimulates microbial life, ensuring the underground vitality of our vines and contributing notably to the role of nitrogen in vine growth. Soil and inter-row management is carried out using tools that respect soil life, such as clod-breaking discs and Kress finger weeders. Agroecology is an ongoing journey, a quest for balance and respect for living nature. It is by cultivating this synergy that we succeed in crafting wines that are the pure expression of our terroir—authentic wines that tell the story of a committed estate. This approach also allows us to experiment with and replant heritage grape varieties that had disappeared, thereby contributing to the richness and resilience of our cultivated diversity.
