Bouquet 3196-57 B (G9), a low-alcohol grape variety

Origins rooted in innovative research

The Bouquet 3196-57 B grape variety, more commonly known by its working name 'G9', is a white variety resulting from Alain Bouquet's breeding work. These 'Bouquet' varieties are the fruit of over thirty-five years of research, aimed at obtaining Vitis vinifera varieties with tolerance to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew. G9 is specifically derived from a cross between ITALIA B and MTP 1-2-82. Its temporary classification in France since 2018 marks an important milestone towards its official recognition and availability for all winegrowers. This approach stands out through successive backcrosses with Vitis vinifera, thereby ensuring organoleptic qualities close to traditional grape varieties whilst incorporating enhanced resistance. To better understand the distinction between these varieties and rootstocks, we invite you to read our article 'Hybrid or Vinifera? What the genome of resistant grape varieties really tells us'. Among the other interesting varieties emerging from this research are Chasan descendants, such as Bouquet 3159-2-12 B, and Fer Servadou progeny like Bouquet 3160-27-4 N.

The work surrounding the Bouquet varieties, notably G9, is part of a broader movement to adapt viticulture to environmental and health-related challenges. These newly bred varieties are essential in enabling winegrowers to reduce plant protection treatments while preserving wine quality. Promising vineyard performance

Bouquet 3196-57 B (G9) is recognised for its moderate vigour and very erect growth habit, making vineyard management straightforward. Although specific data on its budburst and precise ripening period are not yet detailed, its primary asset is its disease tolerance. Belonging to the family of Bouquet varieties, it inherits significant resistance to powdery and downy mildew, representing a major asset for more environmentally friendly viticulture. This tolerance allows for a substantial reduction in the use of crop protection products. Organic vine management, particularly in disease control, is a topic we discuss regularly. Winemaking and oenological potential

This white grape variety is distinguished by its oenological potential to produce high-quality, light, and balanced white wines. It is particularly prized for its ability to yield wines with very fine tannins and low alcohol levels, earning it the nickname 'pure pleasure white'. Its profile is compared to that of Chardonnay, with a slightly more tannic touch and a high concentration of glutathione, a natural antioxidant. These characteristics make it an ideal candidate for fresh, approachable, and elegant wines.

Tasting notes

Wines crafted from Bouquet G9 display an aromatic spectrum driven by citrus and tropical fruit notes. On the palate, they prove fine and balanced, offering good volume and texture. Its low alcohol content and vibrant freshness make it an approachable and enjoyable wine, described by experts as effortlessly drinkable. This style of aromatic profile pairs wonderfully alongside regional white wines, such as those made from Sauvignon or Sémillon.

Presence at Cazebonne

At Château Cazebonne, we take a keen interest in historical grape varieties once grown in Bordeaux. We also plan to plant several resistant varieties, notably from the Bouquet programme, to observe their performance in the face of climate change.
