Among the vine diseases threatening the longevity of our vineyards, esca is undoubtedly one of the most formidable. This complex disease, caused by a complex of wood-decay fungi, attacks the internal tissues of the vine, causing its progressive decline. Symptoms can vary: we often observe a sudden drying of the leaves, entire bunches wilting, or necrotic spots on the trunk and arms of the vine. These manifestations, although sometimes spectacular, are often the sign of deep and irreversible damage to the vine. A vine affected by esca is doomed to die, leading to significant losses for the winegrower.
Historically, esca has always been present in vineyards, but its impact has increased in recent decades, notably due to the extended lifespan of vines and certain cultural practices. There is currently no curative treatment. Prevention therefore relies on pruning that respects sap flow, healthy vineyard management, and the planting of healthy vine material.
At Château Cazebonne, we are aware of the gravity of this threat. This is why our commitment to organic viticulture makes perfect sense. By promoting biodiversity, enriching the life of our soils, and adopting gentle cultural practices, we seek to strengthen the natural defences of our vines. Robust vines and a balanced ecosystem are better equipped to face attacks, including wood diseases like esca.
Our approach goes beyond mere prevention. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne highlights in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", the genetic diversity of Bordeaux vineyards has been heavily reduced over time. Certain ancient grape varieties, which were naturally more resistant and better adapted to our terroir, have unfortunately disappeared. At Château Cazebonne, we have embarked on the research and replanting of these forgotten grape varieties. We are convinced that this rediscovered heritage is a key to preserving the resilience of our vineyards in the face of today's and tomorrow's health challenges, including esca. By bringing these ancestral varieties back to life, we are contributing to a more sustainable and robust viticulture.
Esca is a complex fungal disease that affects the wood of the vine, leading to its progressive decline. It is caused by a complex of wood-decay fungi that colonise the vine's vascular system. External symptoms often appear long after the disease has established itself inside the wood. The action of these fungi interrupts the sap flow, causing leaves to wilt, bunches to dry out, and necrosis to appear. The cycle of esca is perennial, developing slowly over several years before causing a rapid decline of the vines, which is particularly visible during hot and stressful periods for the vine, such as in summer. Certain vines may show temporary remissions before finally dying off.
Esca is present in all vineyards across the world and represents a major economic challenge. Cultural practices, particularly severe pruning that leaves large wounds, can encourage the penetration of fungal spores. Global warming and the extended lifespan of vines tend to increase its prevalence. At Château Cazebonne, regular observation of the vineyard work allows us to identify affected vines and adapt our interventions. By favouring an agroecological approach, we seek to strengthen the overall health of the vineyard to make it more resilient against this type of disease, also including powdery mildew and downy mildew, which are other significant cryptogamic diseases.
This long-term endeavour is made possible thanks to the support of many wine lovers who, like you, have embraced our cuvées. By tasting our wines made from these rare grape varieties, you are actively participating in this viticultural renaissance and the preservation of an entire chapter of Bordeaux history. Your support allows us to continue our efforts and revive the diversity of our vineyard, thus offering it better prospects against diseases like esca. To deepen your knowledge of the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to receive the digital version of Jean-Baptiste Duquesne's book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages".
