Category: Replanting the vines

At Château Cazebonne, we are convinced that the richness of a terroir is not measured solely by the quality of its wine, but also by the vitality of the ecosystem that surrounds it. This is why the planting of bocage hedgerows has become an essential practice in our agroecological approach. Far from being mere boundaries, these green havens play a multifunctional role and actively contribute to the biodiversity of our vineyard parcels.
Why plant hedgerows in a vineyard?
Welcoming biodiversity
Hedgerows provide refuges and ecological corridors for a multitude of species: birds in the vines, beneficial insects (ladybirds, hoverflies...), and small mammals. These natural guests participate in the regulation of vineyard pests, thus reducing the need for phytosanitary interventions. They also encourage the presence of pollinators, which are essential to the surrounding flora.
Protecting the crops
True natural ramparts, hedgerows protect the vines from climatic hazards. They mitigate the force of the wind, thereby limiting soil erosion and mechanical damage to the vine plants. In summer, they provide beneficial shade that regulates the temperature and preserves soil moisture, which are precious assets in the face of increasingly frequent droughts.
Improving soil and water quality
The extensive root system of hedgerows improves soil structure, promotes water infiltration, and limits surface runoff. They also help filter potential pollutants, thus protecting the quality of groundwater and surface water. The organic matter they provide enriches the soil and supports microbiological activity.
Enhancing the landscape
Beyond their ecological and agronomic functions, hedgerows contribute to the aesthetics of the vineyard landscape. They structure the parcels, offer a harmonious natural setting, and reinforce the identity of our terroir. They are also the reflection of respectful and integrated viticulture.
The Château Cazebonne approach
At Château Cazebonne, our hedgerow planting programme is carefully considered and adapted to our environment. We favour varied, local species (oaks, hornbeam, maples, privet, blackthorn...) to ensure maximum biological diversity and better resilience. The density and positioning of these hedgerows are studied to optimise their benefits.
We believe that replanting hedgerows is a long-term investment for the health of our vines and the sustainability of our estate. It is a concrete way to contribute to the fight against the erosion of biodiversity and to be part of the viticulture of the future. To find out more about all our commitments, please do not hesitate to consult our book about the estate or test your knowledge of the terroir.
Planting hedgerows is much more than a simple environmental measure; it is a pillar of our philosophy at Château Cazebonne. It means believing in a viticulture that is enriched by its environment and that offers, generation after generation, wines that reflect the vitality and diversity of our terroirs. This practice reconnects with ancestral expertise and forms part of the history of the vine, where balance with nature was paramount.
