Young Vines

Young vines: foundations of the viticultural future

At the heart of vine cultivation, young shoots represent much more than just simple plants. They are the promise of future harvests, the expression of a terroir in the making, and the daily challenge of the winegrower. Every vine, from its very first days, is a complex organism that requires meticulous attention to flourish and produce exceptional grapes. Indeed, as expert Jean-Baptiste Duquesne points out in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", the sustainable establishment of the vineyard intrinsically depends on the quality of each vine's first years of life.

Essential root development for longevity

Root development is undoubtedly the most crucial stage. In its early years, the young vine deploys a deep and extensive root system, which will allow it to draw the nutrients and water necessary for its growth, even during periods of drought. This invisible subterranean work is the foundation of the vine's resilience and longevity. Good rooting guarantees better resistance to climatic stress and diseases, and contributes to the balance of the future vine, directly influencing the quality and typicity of the resulting wines. Proper planting is therefore paramount.

Care and development of the young vine

The initial development of the young vine, from budburst to the véraison of the first fruits, is a period of intense growth. The winegrower must provide regular monitoring to ensure a good structure and prevent diseases. Operations such as desuckering and trellising are essential to guide growth and promote aeration, thereby reducing the risks of downy or powdery mildew.

Establishing a new parcel

The decision to plant young vines often follows the uprooting of ageing parcels or to diversify the grape varieties planted. The choice of rootstock and grape variety is crucial and takes into account the specificities of the terroir and the qualitative objectives. Soil preparation is also a key stage, often enriched with humus to encourage optimal establishment. A good massal selection can also be an asset.

Our young vines at Château Cazebonne

At Château Cazebonne, we attach paramount importance to the establishment of our young vines. It is a long-term investment, an act of transmission and preservation of our viticultural heritage. With this in mind, we are embarking on a bold process of replanting grape varieties in Bordeaux that had sadly disappeared from our viticultural landscape. Grenache, Carignan and also Monbadon; these historic Bordeaux varieties are today returning to their native lands thanks to our determination. This work of reconstitution and experimentation is made possible by the unwavering support of the many enthusiasts who have embraced our wines, and to whom we express our deepest gratitude. Every bottle you taste helps to write a new chapter in the history of Bordeaux vine plants.

The rigorous work we carry out on our young vines is a forward-looking approach, essential for the longevity of our vineyard and the richness of our wines. To learn more about the grape varieties and viticultural history of Bordeaux, we invite you to download our book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". You can also test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes or discover the fruit of our passion by visiting our online shop to explore our cuvées. We use several grafting techniques for this, including the omega graft.
