Le Grand Vin de Cazebonne: the expression of terroir and expertise

At the heart of our approach at Château Cazebonne, the Grand Vin embodies the quintessence of our expertise, combining tradition and respect for the environment. Since 2019, we have held the ambition of creating a Grand Vin, whether red or white, capable of profoundly reflecting the soul of our Bordeaux terroir. More than just a wine, it is the result of a rigorous selection of the best plots on our estate, where every vine receives special attention, from tending the soil right through to the harvest.

Le Grand Vin de Cazebonne is crafted in the purest Bordeaux tradition, where each step of the winemaking process is orchestrated with precision to reveal the complexity and intrinsic elegance of our grape varieties. For the red, power and structure marry with subtle aromas of black fruit and spices, promising excellent ageing potential. For its part, our white Grand Vin offers a dazzling freshness and distinctive minerality, the signature of our limestone terroirs.

These wines are designed for harmonious evolution. Over time, they will reveal deeper aromatic nuances and a silky texture, a testament to their ageing potential. Every bottle is an invitation to patience, to discover a growing complexity, revealing the richness of our winemaking history and the uniqueness of our estate.

An exceptional terroir for a Grand Vin

The crafting of our Grand Vin begins long before the winemaking, in the intimacy of our plots. The Cazebonne terroir, characterised by its deep clay-limestone soils, gives the grapes a unique signature. This soil, originating from asteriated limestone, offers natural drainage and ideal thermal regulation, essential conditions for slow and even ripening. These elements are crucial for the aromatic expression and structure of our wines, allowing the grape varieties to reveal all their nuances.

The winemaking of the Grands Vins: precision and patience

The winemaking of our Grands Vins is a process where every action is carefully considered. After hand-harvesting and meticulous sorting, the grapes are vinified separately by plot, preserving the specificities of each micro-terroir. For the reds, a gentle fermentation and prolonged maceration delicately extract colour, tannins and aromas. Maturation then takes place in French oak barrels, where the wine patiently matures, refining its texture and developing its aromatic complexity. For the whites, low-temperature winemaking preserves freshness and aromas, followed by ageing on fine lees to bring roundness and body. Our respectful approach to indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention in the cellar, such as the absence of excessive sulphite additions, highlight our commitment to an authentic expression of the grape and terroir, as evidenced by the production of some of our cuvées with no added sulphur.

Vintages with a strong personality

Every vintage at Château Cazebonne is a new story, influenced by the year's climatic conditions. The Grands Vins are a reflection of these particularities, capturing the meteorological essence of the season. For example, warm and sunny years can produce richer and more concentrated wines, while cooler vintages will bring vivacity and elegance. This variability is a wealth, giving each bottle its own identity and a unique ageing potential.

Bottling and ageing potential

The bottling of our Grands Vins takes place after extended ageing, when the wine has reached the desired balance and complexity. Each bottle is then stored in our cellars, where it continues to evolve. The ageing potential of our Grands Vins is significant; they are designed to improve with time, developing tertiary aromas of forest floor, leather or candied fruit, and an increasingly silky texture. This is why we also offer wines that already have a few years of age, as evidenced by the reviews of our best Vin de Graves in 2023.

Aromatic profile and structure

Red Grand Vin

Our red Grand Vin is characterised by a deep colour and complex aromas of ripe red fruit, blackcurrant and spicy notes, sometimes of tobacco or liquorice. On the palate, it offers an elegant tannic structure and beautiful aromatic persistence, with a remarkable balance between power and finesse.

White Grand Vin

The white Grand Vin, meanwhile, is enticing with its brilliant appearance and golden nuances. The nose reveals notes of citrus, white flowers and pronounced minerality. On the palate, its lively freshness is balanced by a beautiful fullness and a long finish marked by saline touches.

At Cazebonne, we are also committed to reviving the forgotten grape varieties of Bordeaux. This replanting work is a long-term project, made possible by the unwavering support of the many enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and share our vision of preserving our viticultural heritage.
