Root dipping of vine plants

What is root dipping?

Root dipping (pralinage) is an ancestral viticultural and arboricultural technique that involves immersing the bare roots of a young plant, prior to its definitive planting, into a slurry known as a "pralin" or root dip. This mixture is generally composed of water, fine topsoil (preferably clay-rich), well-rotted manure or compost, and sometimes additives promoting root development or phytosanitary protection. This operation must be carried out with care, immediately before planting, to maximise its benefits for the establishment of the plant in its new environment.

The objectives of root dipping for root establishment

Root dipping serves several essential agronomic objectives, particularly for the success of vine planting. Firstly, the slurry coats the roots, protecting them from desiccation during transport and while awaiting planting out. This is crucial for the plant's survival, as a dried-out root loses much of its absorption capacity. Secondly, this muddy layer ensures better contact between the roots and the surrounding soil, facilitating the exchange of water and nutrients from the very beginning. It fills even the smallest gaps, eliminating air pockets that could hinder root development. Finally, the nutrients and microbial elements present in the dip stimulate the growth of rootlets, thereby promoting rapid and vigorous vine establishment. The use of resistant rootstocks demands an equally strong start, and root dipping contributes to the vitality of young vines. These young shoots will subsequently benefit from support techniques such as trellising on stakes (échalas), ensuring optimal growth and balanced development. Firming the vine (calage) is also an essential step after planting to ensure the stability of the young plant. Other post-planting operations, such as mounding up the vine (earthing up), are equally vital for protecting the young plant. The success of these operations often relies on the expertise of professionals such as those working as vine nurserymen.
