Pierre Galet (1921–2019) is universally recognised as a towering figure of 20th-century ampelography, whose work revolutionised the study and understanding of grape varieties worldwide. Professor Emeritus at the École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier, he dedicated his life to the identification, description, and classification of countless vine varieties.
His approach was rooted in the meticulous, rigorous observation of the morphological characteristics of the vine: leaf shape, the architecture of the petiole sinuses, shoot tips, shoot colour, and the morphology of clusters and berries. This precise, systematised method enabled him to develop an identification system of unrivalled reliability. Endowed with an insatiable curiosity, Pierre Galet travelled the world's vineyards, cataloguing and studying thousands of grape varieties, thereby establishing an invaluable scientific overview.
For the Bordeaux vineyard and, more specifically, for our work at Château Cazebonne, Pierre Galet's research is of inestimable value. It provides us with precise descriptions and crucial identification keys for numerous Bordeaux grape varieties, whether formerly major or secondary. His investigations helped untangle historical confusions and shed light on the evolution of Bordeaux ampelography over the centuries.
For instance, he popularised the hypothesis of the Gironde origin of the Baroque variety (Plant Bordelais) in Lesparre, and documented the historical presence of Melon de Bourgogne (Blanc de Nantes) in the Gironde—a fact largely forgotten today. The descriptions he left behind of so-called "forgotten" grape varieties, even when he did not always have the opportunity to observe them in the field, often drew upon earlier works and serve as an invaluable aid in their identification.
Although recent advances in DNA analysis have sometimes refined or nuanced certain of his hypotheses regarding origins or parentage, Pierre Galet's descriptive and classification work remains a cornerstone of modern ampelography.
Born in 1921, Pierre Galet quickly became an iconic figure. Educated at the École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier, he spent most of his career there, helping to train generations of ampelographers. (Ampelography, the science of the vine, owes much of its modern methodology to him. His observations established universal criteria for grape variety identification.) His work was not confined to teaching; he travelled tirelessly, from Europe to distant continents, to document the world's viticultural diversity.
His publications remain authoritative today and represent essential references for any ampelographer and knowledgeable enthusiast. Among the most iconic are:
Pierre Galet's contribution to ampelography is foundational. He not only systematised the visual identification of grape varieties through precise morphological descriptors (leaf shape and indentations, shoot tips, etc.), but he also highlighted the extraordinary richness of the world's viticultural heritage. His work established a solid foundation for future research, including DNA profiling, which sometimes complements or confirms his observations. For example, his descriptions of forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties offer invaluable pathways for their revival, as is the case at Château Cazebonne, where we draw inspiration from these pioneering works to bring historical varieties back to life. Count Odart, a renowned ampelographer, had in his time initiated this descriptive approach, which was later brought to fruition by Pierre Galet. However, it was the work of Viala and Vermorel: the monumental Ampélographie that marked a decisive turning point prior to Pierre Galet's research.
Our approach to reviving historical grape varieties at Cazebonne follows directly in the footsteps of these great researchers who worked tirelessly to advance knowledge and preserve viticultural heritage. Thanks to the unwavering support of the many enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and share our passion, we are able to revive in Bordeaux these grape varieties that had regrettably disappeared from our landscapes. To deepen your understanding of this fascinating history, Jean-Baptiste Duquesne has published the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages"; we invite you to download the digital version. To test your knowledge, feel free to explore our wine quizzes. Finally, to discover and purchase our cuvées crafted from these rediscovered varieties, we invite you to visit our online Bordeaux wine shop.
