5 C

The Teleki 5 C rootstock, a solution for damp-prone soils

Origin and breeding

The Teleki 5 C rootstock, often referred to simply as 5 C, is the result of a cross between Vitis berlandieri and Vitis riparia. It was bred by the Hungarian viticulturist Sigmund Teleki at the beginning of the 20th century, in the post-phylloxera era when the search for resistant rootstocks was vital to the survival of European vineyards. Teleki's work led to the selection of hybrids adapted to diverse soil and climate conditions, thereby contributing to the regeneration of global viticulture.

Soil adaptation

Teleki 5 C is distinguished by its good tolerance to moisture and root asphyxiation, making it an appealing rootstock for cool or damp soils. Its resistance to active limestone is moderate, with a Chlorosis Power Index (CPI) of 20 and a tolerance of up to 9% active lime. Conversely, it shows low drought tolerance, making it less suitable for arid terroirs. It adapts well to compact, clay-rich soils, but is less suited to very shallow or sandy soils.

Influence on the scion

This rootstock confers moderate vigour to the scion and tends to advance the ripening of grape varieties. This can be an asset in regions where ripening can sometimes be challenging. Its influence on yield is also moderate, allowing for balanced production without excess. It fosters good uptake of nitrogen and potassium, essential elements for vine development and grape quality.

Graft affinity and vineyard management

Teleki 5 C shows good affinities with most grape varieties grown in Bordeaux, providing reliable compatibility. For vine training and management, it is generally recommended for medium planting densities. Its controlled vigour allows for moderate pruning and effective canopy management. Its good rooting ability facilitates vine establishment after planting.

Vulnerabilities and limitations

Although resistant to phylloxera, Teleki 5 C is susceptible to nematodes and fanleaf virus. Its low drought tolerance can be a limiting factor in increasingly warm climates. Regular monitoring is required to prevent the onset of iron chlorosis on excessively calcareous soils, despite a certain degree of tolerance. It is not known to induce significant coulure.

Relevance in the context of climate change

In the context of climate change, Teleki 5 C may find a place in areas where rainfall remains sufficient and soils retain some freshness and moisture. Its ability to advance ripening can benefit certain grape varieties, allowing for harvesting before late-summer heat peaks. However, its low drought tolerance calls for increased vigilance and potential adjustments to viticultural practices in Bordeaux.

Presence and use at Château Cazebonne

This rootstock has never been trialled at the estate.

Château Cazebonne is committed to preserving and enhancing Bordeaux's viticultural heritage, notably by replanting ancient grape varieties. To deepen your knowledge of the subject and discover other varieties, in particular the Riparia Gloire de Montpellier rootstock and The 125 AA rootstock (Kober 125 AA), as well as The Nemadex Alain Bouquet rootstock, this long-term endeavour is made possible thanks to the support of wine lovers who discover and appreciate our cuvées.
