I cannot recommend enough reading this magnificent book: Les raisins de Jean-Joseph Redouté

At the beginning of the 19th century, a collection of grape varieties from all over France was assembled in the Jardin du Luxembourg. The aim was to describe these grape varieties, which bore very different names across different corners of the country. Artists, including Redouté, were then commissioned to create watercolour plates on vellum.
The grape variety we are presenting here is, according to Redouté, Salmandis. Contemporary ampelographer JM Boursiquot informs us that this grape variety resembles the Cabernet dégénéré found in the Vassal collections, which is thought to be a foliar mutant of Cabernet Franc.
