Rather than trimming shoots, that is to say cutting all the shoots that grow above the row (a task usually done mechanically), what if we tried ‘cabanage’ (shoot braiding)?
It involves braiding the shoots to prevent them from sprawling in all directions. It is also a signal that can encourage the vine to stop producing secondary growth, especially lateral shoots, and to focus more on channelling sap to the grape bunches.
We are going to braid the shoots on one parcel and see if the results on the grapes are better.
It takes more work, but if the results are there!
