At the heart of our agroecological project, Le Jardin des Vignes does more than revive ancient Bordeaux grape varieties. It is also a welcoming ground for diversified agriculture, where vegetables from the kitchen garden harmoniously sit alongside the vines. Our salad is one of the finest examples of this: grown in "joualles", these traditional rows planted between the vines, it benefits from a unique environment and special attention from Francis, our passionate market gardener.
Every leaf of our salads tells a story: that of a living soil, naturally enriched, and a Bordeaux climate that gives our vegetables an incomparable flavour. Far from intensive monocultures, our farming methods respect biodiversity and favour authentic taste. The freshness of the salad from Le Jardin des Vignes reflects this respectful approach to the land and its bounties, offering a tasting experience that goes far beyond a simple green leaf.
This bold initiative, which replants lost grape varieties in Bordeaux and reintroduces diversified farming right within the vineyard, is the result of a deep conviction. It is made possible by the unwavering support of a community of enlightened enthusiasts. Their choices, curiosity, and commitment by our side are the driving force behind this renaissance. Thanks to them, the extraordinary ampelographic diversity of our region, as described in the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne, published by Éditions BBD, is regaining its rightful place and expression.
If you wish to discover the fruits of this research and commitment, all our vintages, as well as the produce from our Le Jardin des Vignes when available, are accessible in the Cazebonne shop. To deepen your knowledge of this fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties and our approach, we also invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". This work explores in detail the ampelographic richness of our terroir, of which Le Jardin des Vignes is a living, promising expression.
Le Jardin des Vignes is not just a mere kitchen garden; it is an open-air laboratory where the spirit of Château Cazebonne unfolds. Located at the heart of the estate, it blends harmoniously into the viticultural landscape. The immediate proximity to the vines allows for constant observation of the interactions between the various crops and the surrounding flora and fauna. This location also promotes a short supply chain, from field to plate, guaranteeing the incomparable freshness of our produce.
The geology of our estate, characterised by clay-limestone and gravel soils, offers a diversity of terroirs suitable for vine growing, but also for early vegetables such as salad greens. The specificities of these soils, combined with a Bordeaux oceanic climate, directly influence the texture and flavour of our salads. We implement agroecological farming practices to preserve and enrich this diversity, notably by fostering soil biodiversity.
Around our salad plots, life teems. Rosebushes, often planted at the end of the rows, are not merely aesthetic; they play a physiological sentinel role for the vines. The hedges and adjacent grassed areas harbour rich biodiversity. Here, one finds a multitude of beneficial insects, such as ladybirds and hoverflies, which are invaluable allies in the fight against aphids. This natural dynamic contributes to the good health of our crops, including the salad greens.
Discovering our salad from Le Jardin des Vignes is much more than a simple tasting. It is an immersion into a farming philosophy that respects the land. Although we do not organise tours specifically dedicated to our vegetable plots, our visitors can catch sight of these diversified crops during their walks around the estate. The ideal time to enjoy fresh lamb's lettuce is naturally spring and summer, when it is harvested at full maturity. We encourage our visitors to contact us to discover our comprehensive approach to sustainable viticulture, notably regarding beetroot.
This approach, which replants vanished grape varieties in Bordeaux and reintroduces diversified farming right within the vineyard, is the result of a deep conviction that we share with our wine lovers. Thanks to them, we celebrate the extraordinary ampelographic diversity of our region. To find out more, please feel free to download the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" or test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes. And to discover the fruits of this work and our commitment, all our vintages are available in our online shop.
