Sauvignon Rouge: A Rare Natural Colouration of Sauvignon Blanc

A Discreet and Anecdotal Colour Mutation

At the heart of ampelographic richness, Sauvignon Rouge stands out as a true curiosity. Far from having shaped Bordeaux's viticultural history like its illustrious cousins, it is above all a natural colour mutation of Sauvignon Blanc, much like the better-known Sauvignon Gris grape variety. Rarely mentioned in the historical annals of Bordeaux grape classifications, its presence in the vineyard has always been highly confidential, if not purely anecdotal.

It is very likely that Sauvignon Rouge was never deliberately cultivated for winemaking. Instead, one imagines it appearing fortuitously within a parcel of Sauvignon Blanc or Gris, bearing witness to the genetic vagaries of the vine. In fact, ampelographer Louis Bordenave identified a few vines at Château Haut-Brion in Pessac during the 1990s. While anecdotal, this discovery testifies to its historical existence and to the hidden diversity within even the most iconic grape varieties.

A Grape Variety with No Major Oenological Value for Bordeaux

The reason it never became widespread is simple: this colour mutation offered no particular qualitative advantage compared to its white and grey counterparts. Sauvignon is prized above all for its freshness, vivid aromas, and crisp acidity in white wines. A red version, likely pale in colour and with different characteristics, never truly gained traction among Bordeaux winegrowers, who already had a roster of high-performing red varieties at their disposal, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Sauvignon Rouge thus remained a genetic variation, a botanical curiosity rather than a frontline wine grape.

Sauvignon Rouge: A Witness to Bordeaux's Viticultural Diversity

At Château Cazebonne, our revival initiative focuses on forgotten grape varieties that have shaped Bordeaux’s history through their historic cultivation and qualitative potential. While Sauvignon Rouge, given its purely anecdotal nature, does not qualify for replanting, its existence nevertheless illustrates the fascinating genetic diversity held within the Bordeaux wine world. This work of remembrance and dedication is made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the many wine enthusiasts who enjoy our wines and share our passion for rediscovering viticultural heritage. To explore the outcome of this approach and taste our cuvées crafted from rediscovered varieties, we invite you to visit our online shop. To delve deeper into this subject, Jean-Baptiste Duquesne's book “Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages” can be downloaded in digital format. Feel free to also test your knowledge with our wine quizzes. You might, for example, be surprised by the history of Baco Rouge (hybrid): a witness to post-phylloxera Bordeaux.
