At Château Cazebonne, the wildlife in the vines is not only a spectacle, but also an indicator of the good health of our ecosystem. Among the species observed, the Little Egret, or Egretta garzetta in Latin, is a particularly appreciated and revealing presence.
The Little Egret is a bird of remarkable elegance, easily identifiable by its immaculate white plumage. Medium in size (about 55 to 65 cm long with a wingspan of 88 to 106 cm), it is characterised by a slender black beak, black legs and bright yellow toes, visible even from a distance as it moves about. It also sports two long, fine feathers at the back of its head during the breeding season, accentuating its graceful appearance.
Although traditionally associated with wetlands and waterways, its adaptation to our vineyard plots is further proof of the rich biodiversity at Château Cazebonne. It is often observed in areas where the soils are most alive, particularly after a shower or soil cultivation, where it finds an abundance of prey.
The Little Egret is not a sedentary species year-round in the vineyard. Its presence can vary according to the seasons, favouring our plots as a hunting and feeding area during periods when resources are abundant, notably in spring and autumn. It does not generally nest in the vines but nearby, in colonies established close to water sources.
Its ecological role in the vineyard is undeniably beneficial. By feeding primarily on small fish, amphibians, reptiles, and above all invertebrates such as earthworms and insects, it actively participates in the natural regulation of populations. This predation helps to maintain a biological balance without resorting to external treatments, fitting perfectly into our approach to sustainable and organic viticulture. Its hunting technique, stealthy and efficient, is a fascinating dance to observe in the vine rows. Just like the heron, the egret is a precious testament to the biodiversity of our estate.
The regular presence of the Little Egret at Château Cazebonne is a barometer of the vitality of our soils and the tranquillity that reigns within our vineyard. It confirms the effectiveness of our agroecological practices, which aim to preserve and enrich soil life. Living soils, rich in organic matter, guarantee the abundance of invertebrates on which it feeds. Thus, its slender silhouette, striding across our plots, is a visual confirmation for us that our efforts for a vineyard in harmony with its environment are bearing fruit.
Château Cazebonne is committed to reviving the history of the Bordeaux vineyard by replanting forgotten grape varieties, an endeavour made possible by the support of wine lovers who adopt our wines; to deepen your knowledge of this approach and the history of Bordeaux grape varieties, the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" is available in digital format to download here, and if you wish to test your wine knowledge, take part in our oenological quizzes, before discovering our cuvées, the fruit of this passion and commitment.
