At Château Cazebonne, the presence of the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a visible mark of our commitment to biodiversity. This bird, from the Ardeidae family, is distinguished by its elegance and its ability to adapt to various aquatic environments, including the retention ponds and ditches that punctuate the vineyard. The Grey Heron, whose grey-blue plumage harmonises with the autumnal and wintery hues of our landscapes, boasts a long, sinuous neck, slender legs and a powerful yellow beak, perfectly adapted for fishing.
The heron's life cycle is intimately linked to the availability of its food resources. Although it can be observed all year round at Cazebonne, spring and summer are favourable periods for its reproduction, often in colonies called heronries, generally close to wooded areas and large bodies of water. Its regular presence, particularly during mild winters and periods of low rainfall, highlights the vitality of our living soils and the aquatic fauna they harbour.
At Cazebonne, the heron finds an ideal habitat. The ditches and ponds, created for better water management, have become micro-ecosystems rich in fish, amphibians (frogs, for example) and insects. It is here that it can be observed, motionless and patient, lying in wait for its next prey. These wetlands are not only a larder for the heron, they also contribute to the hydraulic regulation of the plots, which is beneficial for the vines, and to the promotion of a diverse flora.
The heron's ecological role is significant. As an apex predator in the aquatic food chain, it helps balance the populations of fish and amphibians. Its presence is an indicator of good water quality and the absence of major disturbances in these environments. For the vines, its interaction is neutral and even indirectly beneficial: it poses no threat to the crop, but its presence confirms the natural richness of our estate, as a healthy environment is essential for producing quality grapes. The fauna surrounding the vineyard therefore contributes to a healthy ecosystem, playing a part in our approach to sustainable viticulture.
In practical terms, herons are welcome at Cazebonne. We ensure that undisturbed water areas are maintained and that peripheral habitats are preserved for their nesting. Watching a heron take off gracefully above the young vines has become a familiar sight, reinforcing our conviction that agriculture which respects its environment is not only possible, but essential for the future of our Graves wines.
Just as the heron's presence bears witness to the vitality of our ecosystems, the return of forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux illustrates our quest for authenticity and singularity. This work is made possible thanks to the support of wine lovers who embrace our wines and share our vision. To find out more about these resurrected grape varieties, download the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", test your knowledge of oenology with our oenology quizzes, and discover our vintages, the fruits of this passion and commitment, by visiting the Cazebonne shop. Furthermore, if the heron interests you, you might be fascinated by the Egret category.
