Cranes

Common cranes: majestic sentinels of the seasons at Château Cazebonne

Look up to the sky at Château Cazebonne and listen carefully: the powerful and recognisable call of the cranes, that guttural trumpeting, unmistakably marks the passing of the seasons. Whether it is their perfectly orchestrated departure in formation towards the south as winter approaches, heralding the first cold spells, or their triumphant return in spring, a sign of renewal and reawakening life, observing these majestic birds is always a special moment. The common cranes (Grus grus), whose proud silhouettes and calls resonate above our vines, are more than mere migrants; they are living sentinels, precise indicators of the natural cycles that govern our terroir.

These birds, whose scientific name is Grus grus, are easily recognisable. Large in size, they generally reach 1 to 1.30 metres in height and have an impressive wingspan of 1.80 to 2.40 metres. Their plumage is mainly ash-grey, with a touch of black and white on the head and neck, and a characteristic red patch on the back of the crown.

The life cycle of common cranes is intrinsically linked to the seasons. Their migration is one of the most eagerly awaited natural spectacles at Château Cazebonne. In autumn, with the first frosts, they begin their long journey south, often heading for Spain. In spring, usually as early as February or March, they make the return journey, signalling the start of the new vine-growing season. These regular back-and-forth journeys set the rhythm of the vineyard's year.

Common cranes appreciate vast open spaces and wetlands, often near bodies of water or crops. At Château Cazebonne, they are frequently spotted flying over the vine parcels, particularly those adjacent to wooded areas and watercourses. The presence of living soils and rich biodiversity within our estate offers a welcoming environment for these great migrators. Their passage is a fascinating spectacle, a true aerial dance that bears witness to the vitality of our environment.

As important links in the ecosystem, common cranes contribute to the regulation of various populations, feeding on seeds, insects and small rodents. Their presence indicates a healthy and balanced environment. For our vines, their impact is neutral, or even indirectly beneficial. They do not cause damage to the grapes or vines. On the contrary, by feeding, they participate in the vineyard's auxiliary fauna, thus contributing to a natural balance and the control of certain potential pests of the vine plants. They symbolise our commitment to respectful viticulture, in harmony with its environment. If you are interested in the flora and fauna of our estate, we also invite you to discover the heron, another majestic inhabitant of our wetlands.

If these birds choose to regularly fly over our lands, it is a sign that our ecosystem is healthy and provides favourable conditions for wildlife. This synergy between man, vine and fauna is at the heart of our philosophy at Château Cazebonne, where every natural element has its role to play.

This long-term undertaking, this quest for authenticity and singularity, aimed at replanting forgotten grape varieties that forged the identity of our terroir, such as Castets, Mancin or Saint Macaire, would be impossible without the unwavering support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. It is thanks to them that we can bring these lost viticultural treasures of the Bordeaux landscape back to life, or learn more about the history of our vineyard by downloading the free digital version of the book on the history of Bordeaux grape varieties that we have published here: "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". Do not hesitate to test your wine knowledge with our oenological quizzes, or discover our cuvées, the fruit of this passion and commitment, by visiting the Cazebonne boutique.
