I want itGreat Spotted Woodpecker
The Great Spotted Woodpecker, known scientifically as Dendrocopos major, is a common woodland bird that is also frequently seen in our vineyards and along their edges. Recognisable by its contrasting black, white, and vivid red plumage under the tail, it is renowned for its characteristic drumming on tree trunks. This rapid, powerful sound serves as both a vital means of communication and an essential tool in its search for food.
A sedentary bird, it is present year-round at Cazebonne. Highly active in spring during the nesting season, it spends its days drumming on trees, shrubs, and even vineyard stakes. Its presence bears witness to a balanced ecosystem and a rich, functional biodiversity, which is particularly encouraging for an organic vineyard. It is mainly observed in the wooded areas and hedgerows bordering our plots, which provide both shelter and food for this species.
The ecological role of the Great Spotted Woodpecker is essential. By foraging for larvae and wood-boring insects beneath the bark of trees, it acts as a natural regulator, contributing to the health of the surrounding woods and the structural elements of the vineyard. For the vines themselves, its impact is overwhelmingly beneficial. Indeed, it feeds on potentially harmful pests without damaging healthy vine stocks, making it a valuable ally in crop protection. In particular, it helps curtail the proliferation of insects that could weaken trees adjacent to the vines, indirectly supporting biodiversity and the overall balance of the environment.
At Cazebonne, the regular presence of the Great Spotted Woodpecker is a source of great satisfaction, confirming our dedication to environmental stewardship. Since our conversion to biodynamic viticulture, we have observed a marked improvement in birdlife. Caring for our hedgerows and isolated trees, as well as planting new species, encourages such birds to settle. The Great Spotted Woodpecker, much like the Tit or the Common Kestrel, is a key indicator of soil vitality and the overall health of our parcels. This ecological approach fosters a favourable microclimate for the vines, minimising the need for external interventions and enhancing the natural authenticity of our wines.
Just as the Great Spotted Woodpecker is deeply rooted in its territory, Château Cazebonne is committed to reviving the history and viticultural heritage of Bordeaux. This meticulous work is made possible through the steadfast support of the many wine enthusiasts who share our vision and appreciate our cuvées.
