Leaf Warbler

The Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita): the tireless "chiff-chaff" of the Cazebonne vineyards

Despite its understated plumage, with greenish tones blending seamlessly into the foliage, the Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) is an essential and lively presence in our vineyards at Château Cazebonne. This elusive dweller of hedgerows and bushes is far more often heard through its vocal calls than seen with its frail silhouette. Its characteristic song, a metallic and repetitive "chiff-chaff", has become one of the first auditory heralds announcing the arrival of spring, marking nature's annual rebirth.

The Common Chiffchaff is an agile and swift bird. Measuring around 11 cm and weighing barely 7 to 8 grams, it sports discreet plumage: a greenish back, a whitish underbelly lightly tinged with yellow, a pale supercilium (eyebrow stripe), and dark legs. Young birds are often yellower than adults. It is frequently confused with other leaf warblers, but its distinctive song remains the best way to identify it.

Present from February to October, the Common Chiffchaff is one of the earliest migratory birds to return from sub-Saharan Africa to nest in Europe from March onwards. Its activity is intense during nest building, egg laying, and the rearing of chicks—a period during which its song is omnipresent. As summer progresses, its singing becomes scarcer before its departure for its wintering grounds.

A true virtuoso of canopy gleaning, this tireless little insectivore spends its days meticulously scouring our vines' foliage in search of aphids, caterpillars, and a myriad of other small insects. This ceaseless pursuit makes the Common Chiffchaff an invaluable beneficial ally for the natural protection of our vineyards. By biologically regulating populations of potential pests, it actively contributes to the balance of the ecosystem and the overall health of our vines, thereby limiting the need for external interventions.

At Cazebonne, we observe the Common Chiffchaff in the hedgerows bordering our vines, as well as directly within the vineyard plots. With the vines offering vegetative cover and an abundant source of insects, it finds an environment well-suited for foraging and, potentially, breeding. Its presence is a telling indicator of the flourishing biodiversity at Château Cazebonne—a virtuous dynamic greatly fostered by our conversion to organic viticulture in 2017. The absence of synthetic pesticides and the presence of rich, diverse flora create an ideal habitat for this small hunter. During an ornithological survey conducted in October 2023, the detection of the Common Chiffchaff contributed to identifying more than 25 bird species on the estate, bearing witness to the wealth of avian wildlife that has made our plots their home, much like the Titmouse, an acrobatic and valuable ally of the Cazebonne vineyards.

At Château Cazebonne, our commitment extends beyond vine growing. We are dedicated to reviving Bordeaux's viticultural history and heritage by passionately replanting forgotten grape varieties that once shaped our terroir's identity, such as Castets, Mancin, and Saint Macaire. This long-term endeavour—this quest for authenticity and distinctiveness—would be impossible without the steadfast support of the many wine lovers who have embraced our wines and share our vision. To explore the pages of "Bordeaux, a history of grape varieties", which chronicles this fascinating journey of Bordeaux heritage varieties, we invite you to download the digital version. To test your knowledge of grape varieties and the region's viticultural history, feel free to take part in our wine quizzes. Finally, to discover our cuvées, the fruit of this passion and dedication, visit our online shop and support our mission to revitalise Bordeaux's viticultural heritage.
