Tourism

Gironde, a natural and cultural gem on the doorstep of Bordeaux

Gironde is an iconic department in south-west France, renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich heritage. It is a crossroads between the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the vast Landes forests to the south, and the winding valleys of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers that flow through it, offering a unique setting for tourism.

An astonishing geographical and geological mosaic

The Gironde department spans a wide variety of soils, from the sands and clays of the Landes to the limestone of the Garonne and Dordogne hillsides, as well as the gravelly soils typical of the wine-growing areas. This geological diversity results in contrasting landscapes: the imposing dunes of the Atlantic coast, such as the famous Dune du Pilat, give way to the pine forests of the Landes de Gascogne. Further inland, the wine-growing hillsides create a patchwork of vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, while the Gironde and Garonne estuaries are home to specific flora and fauna.Wine geology influences not only the landscapes but also the typical character of the wines, such as those found in asteriated limestone terroirs.

Amidst flora, fauna and wine heritage

Gironde is a true sanctuary for biodiversity. Its pine forests are home to varied wildlife, while its wetlands, particularly around the Arcachon basin, are crucial stopovers for many migratory birds. The flora is dominated by maritime pines on the coast, giving way to richer, agricultural vegetation in the hinterland. At the heart of this lush nature lies a thousand-year-old wine heritage. Vines, cultivated since Antiquity, are omnipresent. From majestic châteaux to small family estates, each property bears witness to a long history and ancestral expertise. There is a great diversity of grape varieties, some of which were once forgotten but are now the focus of conservation efforts, an initiative in which Château Cazebonne actively participates to reintroduce varieties such as Béquignol or Saint-Macaire, thereby enriching the genetic diversity and typical character of Bordeaux wines.

A tourist experience full of discoveries

Gironde offers a multitude of tourist experiences. The ocean beaches are perfect for swimming, surfing and walking. The Arcachon basin, with its oyster-farming cabins and the Dune du Pilat, provides a unique setting for tasting fresh oysters and taking boat trips. Bordeaux, the regional capital, charms visitors with its classical architecture, museums and gastronomy. Wine lovers can explore the wine routes, visit châteaux, and take part in tastings to discover the specificities of the different appellations. The months from May to October are particularly ideal for enjoying all facets of Gironde, with a pleasant climate and a bustling cultural and wine calendar.

The department is dotted with historical treasures, from Gallo-Roman remains to Vauban citadels such as Blaye, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The small medieval villages of the Entre-Deux-Mers region invite you to stroll and discover an authentic way of life. A wine tourism visit in the Graves, for example, allows you to combine the discovery of bucolic landscapes with an immersion into the world of wine.

Initiatives to preserve wine heritage

The preservation and innovation work carried out by estates like Château Cazebonne, which is replanting ancestral grape varieties in Bordeaux that had disappeared, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and our unique approach. To deepen your knowledge of the region's wine history, we invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" by clicking here: download the book on forgotten grape varieties.
