At Château Cazebonne, the vitality of our viticultural ecosystem is revealed in every detail, every plant that flourishes between our rows. Among this spontaneous flora, borage (Borago officinalis) captures our attention with its magnificent intense blue-violet star-shaped flowers, brightening our parcels with a touch of poetry. Belonging to the Boraginaceae family, this robust plant is much more than a simple botanical beauty; it is a precious ally for biodiversity and the health of our soils.
Borage, recognisable by its hairy, rough leaves, as well as its striking blue pendulous flowers, naturally integrates into the organic farming practices at Château Cazebonne. It is an annual plant that generally appears in the spring in our vines and can persist until the first frosts, offering a continuous bloom that enriches the viticultural landscape. It can be observed particularly in the more open and sunny areas of the parcels, where the soil is well-drained, which is characteristic of many locations at Cazebonne.
Its ecological role is manifold. As an excellent melliferous plant, it attracts a wide variety of pollinating insects, notably bees and bumblebees, thereby contributing to biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystem. Underground, its deep root system promotes soil aeration and structuring. As it decomposes, it provides precious organic matter, naturally enriching fertility in an environmentally friendly way, a major asset for the living soils we cultivate. In the same way, purple dead-nettle also contributes to this richness by fostering soil life.
For the vine, borage is a beneficial companion. It is by no means harmful and its actions improve the vineyard's resilience. By improving soil structure, it helps the vine to better capture water and nutrients, which is crucial in the face of climatic hazards. It also helps reduce the need for human intervention in terms of fertilisation, fitting perfectly into our agroecological approach to viticulture. At Château Cazebonne, we tangibly observe the beneficial effect of borage on the vitality of our terroirs, which results in healthier vines and a better expression of our terroir.
Beyond its virtues for the vine, borage is also appreciated for its culinary properties. Its leaves and flowers are edible, boasting a delicate and slightly iodine-like flavour, highlighting the unsuspected richness of the wild flora in our terroirs.
Pursuing this commitment to diversity and authenticity, Château Cazebonne has undertaken the replanting of forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties, such as Castets, Mancin or Saint-Macaire. This patient and passionate work of safeguarding a viticultural heritage is made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and support of the many wine lovers who have embraced the unique flavours of our cuvées, thereby helping to write a new chapter in Bordeaux's winemaking history. Should you wish to delve further into this captivating story, the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" is available in a digital format. For those who want to test their knowledge of Bordeaux wine and much more, our oenological quizzes are an excellent option. And of course, all our wines can be discovered on our online shop.
