Thistle

The thistle (Carduus): wild emblem of our vines

In the Château Cazebonne ecosystem, the thistle, scientifically identified by the Carduus and Cirsium genera within the large Asteraceae family, goes far beyond its image as a "weed". This plant, although often unloved, is considered here as an essential player in our biodiversity.

A perennial herbaceous plant, the thistle stands proudly in our plots, often reaching a significant height, sometimes up to two metres. Its leaves, armed with prickles, are an intense green, and its flowers, which can vary from deep purple to pure white via pinkish and bluish shades, blossom in solitary or clustered flower heads. These inflorescences, often spectacular, are a distinctive characteristic of the species and contribute to its easy recognition in the vineyard landscape.

The life cycle of the thistle within the Cazebonne vineyard extends primarily from spring to the end of summer. After winter, the plant develops a rosette of basal leaves, then its floral stem emerges, supporting the flowers which generally open from May to September, attracting varied fauna. This generous flowering is followed by the production of seeds dispersed by the wind, ensuring the longevity of the species.

The thistle is observed in various places around the estate, particularly at the edge of plots, in uncultivated areas and right in the heart of the vine rows where it benefits from natural grass cover. These areas constitute refuges and ecological corridors where the thistle can flourish, signalling rich and well-aerated soils. Its presence is, moreover, a good indicator of healthy soil, something we strive to maximise at Château Cazebonne by implementing practices that encourage living soil.

The ecological role of the thistle is multiple and precious. Its flowers constitute a major source of nectar and pollen for many pollinating insects, notably bees and bumblebees, essential for pollination and, by extension, the reproduction of many plant species. Furthermore, its prickly structure provides shelter for crop auxiliaries, the natural predators of vine pests. This contribution to fauna and biodiversity is paramount in our biodynamic approach.

Far from being a harmful plant, the thistle interacts beneficially with the vine. Its deep roots decompact the soil, improving its drainage and capacity to retain water. They also bring up minerals from deep layers, making these nutrients available to other plants, including the vine. This natural action promotes the structure and fertility of our terroirs, which, as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne highlights in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", is a determining factor for the quality of our wines.

At Château Cazebonne, observing the thistle informs us about the vigour and health of our soils. We note that where it flourishes, the soil is particularly balanced and rich in microbial life. Its presence reassures us in our environmentally friendly cultivation choices, contributing to the natural balance of our plots and the authentic expression of our terroirs.

Our commitment is demonstrated by the replanting of forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties, a task that is only made possible by the invaluable support of wine lovers who have discovered and adopted our cuvées.
