The principles of biodynamics

Biodynamics is an approach to agriculture and viticulture that goes beyond organic farming. Based on the work of Rudolf Steiner, it considers the estate as a living, self-sustaining organism. The objective is to strengthen the vital forces of the plant and the soil through the use of specific preparations, the observation of cosmic rhythms, and a deep understanding of the interconnection between all elements of the ecosystem. This entails taking into account the influences of the moon, the planets, and other celestial factors on plant growth. In biodynamics, the aim is to create a harmonious balance between soil, plant, animal, and humankind. The main preparations

Biodynamic preparations are at the heart of this method. They are made from natural substances (mineral, plant, or animal) and applied in very low doses as catalysts. Two main categories of preparations are distinguished: soil preparations and compost preparations. Among the most well-known are preparation 500 (horn manure), which promotes soil microbial activity and root development, and preparation 501 (horn silica), which stimulates photosynthesis and strengthens plant resistance. Each preparation plays a specific role and contributes to the overall balance of the vineyard. The use of these preparations is often combined with practices such as biodynamic composting or the preparation of herbal teas (tisanes).

Preparation 508

Preparation 508, also known as "horsetail", is an essential biodynamic preparation for vineyard protection. It is made from field horsetail extract (Equisetum arvense), a plant renowned for its high silica content. This preparation is primarily used to prevent fungal diseases, notably downy mildew and powdery mildew. The silica contained in horsetail strengthens plant cell tissues, making them more resistant to fungal attacks. It is sprayed onto the foliage, usually diluted and dynamised, to optimise its efficacy. Its regular application is a cornerstone of the natural defence strategy for biodynamic vineyards, contributing to the overall health and vigour of the vine.

Cazebonne and biodynamics

At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodynamics goes hand in hand with our dedication to respecting the terroir and producing wines that fully express their origin. We incorporate biodynamic principles into our daily practices, from soil preparation to vineyard management. The use of various preparations, including 508, is a key component of our approach to enhancing the vitality of our vineyards and minimising our reliance on inputs. We firmly believe that healthy vines, grown in a balanced environment, are key to producing superior-quality grapes and authentic wines. This approach is part of a broader commitment to sustainable viticulture, seeking to preserve the richness of our ecosystem for future generations.
