Comfrey: a valuable ally for the vineyard

From plant to soil and vine ally

Comfrey, whose botanical name is Symphytum officinale, is a perennial plant in the Boraginaceae family, long recognised for its multiple virtues, especially in agriculture. Often regarded as a "miracle plant" by gardeners and organic growers, it deserves wider recognition in viticulture for its significant contributions to soil and vine health.

Its deep taproots allow it to draw nutrients and trace elements from the subsoil, bringing them to the surface. This ability makes it an excellent plant for improving soil organic matter and promoting biodiversity within the vineyard.

The specific benefits of comfrey for the vine

Using comfrey in the vineyard fits seamlessly into an agroecological approach to viticulture. Rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and numerous trace elements, it can be utilised in various ways to benefit the vines:

  • Green manure and mulch: Sown between the rows, comfrey acts as an excellent green manure. Once cut, it forms a nutrient-rich mulch that nourishes the soil, limits unwanted weed growth, and retains moisture—a key asset during heatwaves in the vineyards. It thus helps maintain balanced, living soils. Other species, such as buckwheat as a cover crop, plantain, or germander speedwell, can also play a similar role, as can purslane.
  • Liquid plant extracts and fermented teas: Comfrey leaves can be fermented into liquid plant extract. Diluted, this extract provides a potent natural fertiliser, stimulating vine growth, bolstering disease resistance, and enhancing grape quality. It is particularly valued for its high potassium content, essential for fruit development. Much like nettle, another plant frequently used for its fertilising and fortifying properties in biodynamics, comfrey aligns with this approach to revitalising both soil and plants.
  • Compost activator: Adding comfrey to biodynamic compost or traditional compost accelerates decomposition and enriches its nutrient profile, providing a superior soil conditioner for the vines.

Its action contributes to greater vine resilience against environmental stress and enhances the overall vitality of the terroir—an approach we cultivate at Château Cazebonne.

At Château Cazebonne, we are committed to preserving and promoting environmentally friendly viticultural practices, such as integrating beneficial plants for our soils and vines. This fundamental work is also a way to rediscover ancestral techniques and adapt them to contemporary challenges.
