In the world of biodynamics at Château Cazebonne, plant-based herbal teas hold a prominent place, going far beyond simple phytotherapy. They constitute true elixirs for the vine and the soil, actively participating in the balance and vitality of our ecosystem. Far from the concepts of curative treatments, these herbal teas are conceived as energising and preventive preparations, acting in synergy with natural rhythms to strengthen the plant's defences and stimulate soil life. This approach is fully in line with the principles of biodynamics, which aims to consider the vineyard as a living organism where every element interacts harmoniously.
The creation of biodynamic herbal teas is an art that draws upon ancestral knowledge of plant properties. They are used for their specific virtues to strengthen the vine and improve soil life. These preparations, applied to the vine or the soil at key moments in the vegetative cycle, act gently yet deeply. They promote photosynthesis, good sap circulation, better rooting, and the pure expression of the terroir. The harvesting of the herbs, often guided by lunar phases, and the process of dynamisation, which consists of mixing them with water by creating a vortex, are essential to release and amplify their beneficial energies.
At Château Cazebonne, we select specific plants for their particular virtues. For example, the role of horsetail is renowned for its high silica content, which strengthens plant tissues and helps prevent cryptogamic diseases, thus contributing to resistance against downy and powdery mildew. Nettle, from which we also use nettle manure, acts as a powerful activator of microbial life in the soil and a fantastic fortifier for the vine, helping it better withstand stress. Chamomile, valerian, dandelion, and comfrey are also precious allies, each contributing to different aspects of the vineyard's vitality, whether by stimulating growth, improving flowering and fruiting processes, or enriching the soil's organic matter.
This approach, where harmony with nature is paramount, allows us to maintain a resilient and vibrant vineyard. It is inseparable from our mission at Château Cazebonne: replanting the forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux that have shaped the region's viticultural history. This work of preserving the ampelographic heritage, essential for the diversity and resilience of our vineyard, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. To deepen your knowledge of this fascinating history, we invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" via our dedicated page, to test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes, or to discover our biodynamic cuvées directly for sale on our online shop.
