In 1888, R

Demeizeris noted that vine resistance to phylloxera was improved when pruning was carried out according to best practices.
Certainly food for thought today, as grapevine trunk diseases proliferate (notably Esca): vine pruning (especially when poorly executed) and omega grafting are all obstacles preventing a vine from putting up a proper fight against these diseases. Furthermore, in the same work, he observed that layered vines—and therefore ungrafted and well nourished with sap—resist much better.
