In his work 'D'une cause de dépérissement de la vigne et des moyens d'y porter remède' (1887), R Dezemeiris develops a highly innovative pruning theory

Pruning above the diaphragm of the following bud, avoiding flush cuts directly on the cane or vine trunk, to prevent any disruption to the sap flow.
I highly recommend reading this scholarly and remarkably modern work. Our vineyards would certainly suffer far less from grapevine trunk diseases if these principles, dating back over a century, were fully understood today.
Unfortunately, pruning is still all too often treated as a poor relation, outsourced to external contractors whose sole focus is productivity, to the detriment of the vine's longevity.
