Sorrel

Sorrel, a wild and edible perennial from the Vineyard Garden

At the heart of our Jardin des Vignes, sorrel (Rumex acetosa) holds a special place. This herbaceous perennial plant, belonging to the Polygonaceae family, is much more than a simple wild weed. Its name aptly reflects its fresh, tangy, and slightly sharp flavour, a distinctive quality that sets it apart in the plant kingdom.

Botanical description of sorrel

Native to Eurasia, sorrel is recognisable by its deep green, smooth, oblong leaves, which are often arrow-shaped at the base. Its branching stems can reach heights of 60 centimetres to one metre. In summer, it bears discreet spikes of yellow-green flowers, adding a wild and natural touch to our vineyard ecosystem. These botanical characteristics make it easy to identify amongst the diverse flora of our plots.

A treasure trove of flavours and health benefits

Sorrel is prized above all for its culinary virtues. Its refreshing acidity brings an incomparable zest to salads, soups, and sauces. It also pairs wonderfully with fish and meats, such as Gascon black pork. Beyond its culinary appeal, sorrel is renowned for its medicinal properties, particularly its high content of vitamin C and antioxidants. It has also traditionally been used for its diuretic and digestive benefits, seamlessly fitting into a philosophy where nature and well-being are closely linked.

Sorrel, a marker of biodiversity and terroir balance

The natural presence of sorrel and other spontaneous plants in our vineyards, alongside our grape varieties, is a tangible illustration of our commitment to environmentally friendly viticulture and biodiversity. These wild cover plants contribute to the balance of the vineyard ecosystem, nurturing living soils and offering shelter and food for beneficial fauna. Sorrel helps, for instance, to structure the soil, retain moisture, and interact with the local microfauna.

Rumex is indeed a plant genus comprising numerous species, including sorrel. This bold approach to replanting forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux is the result of long-term work carried out by Château Cazebonne. It is made possible thanks to the unwavering support of a community of enlightened enthusiasts. Their choices, curiosity, and engagement alongside us are the driving force behind this revival. To discover the full history of these grape varieties, we invite you to download the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, a history of grape varieties" or to test your knowledge with our wine quizzes. And to taste the fruits of this research and dedication, all our cuvées are available in our online shop.
