Glow-worms: a luminous presence in the Bordeaux vineyards

Scientific name and common designations

The glow-worm, often mistakenly confused with harmful pests, is in fact a vernacular name primarily designating beetle species of the Lampyridae family. In France, the most common species is Lampyris noctiluca. Despite its name, it is not a true worm, but rather an insect.

A luminous description: nocturnal wildlife in the vineyard

Glow-worms are small insects with marked sexual dimorphism. The female, which is wingless (apterous), looks more like a larva, measuring around 10 to 25 mm in length. Her body is soft, segmented, dark brown in colour, and bears luminous organs on the final abdominal segments. She produces the characteristic light. The male, by contrast, is winged and resembles a more conventional beetle, measuring between 10 and 15 mm. He produces no strong light, or merely a very faint, non-flashing glow, and is often difficult to spot with the naked eye. The light emitted by the female is cold bioluminescence, produced by a chemical reaction.

Life cycle and phenology in the vineyard parcels

The glow-worm's life cycle spans several years and encompasses multiple stages. The carnivorous larvae feed mainly on snails and slugs—far less welcome visitors in the vineyards of Château Cazebonne. They hunt mostly at night and can live for several years before pupating. The adult flight and mating season takes place during summer, typically in June and July, when females emit their light to attract males. This is when these glowing insects are most easily observed in the parcels. Once mating has occurred, the males die quickly. Females follow the same fate after laying their eggs. The presence of these insects is a prime indicator of ecological health and biodiversity.

Favoured habitat and observation spots at Cazebonne

Glow-worms favour damp, shaded environments rich in vegetation, where their prey (snails, slugs) thrives. They are frequently found along woodland edges, in meadows, gardens, and grassed vine rows. At Château Cazebonne, our approach to sustainable and organic viticulture fosters diverse flora and fauna, providing welcoming habitats for glow-worms. On summer nights, far from light pollution, certain parcels and their borders offer wonderful opportunities to observe the subtle spectacle of these tiny lights glowing in the grass.

An essential link in ecological balance

The ecological role of the glow-worm is significant, particularly through its larvae preying upon pests such as snails and slugs. As natural predators, they help regulate these populations within the vineyard ecosystem without the need for chemical intervention. Their presence is a clear indicator of a healthy, balanced environment where natural interactions are respected and nurtured. This aligns seamlessly with our philosophy of respecting the terroir and soil life.
