In the diverse ecosystem of Château Cazebonne, snakes, often perceived with apprehension, are essential players in the natural balance of our vineyards. Far from the usual clichés, these discreet reptiles play a crucial role in controlling rodent and insect populations, thereby contributing to the health of our vines naturally, without the need for heavy human intervention.
At Cazebonne, we mainly encounter species harmless to humans, such as the green whip snake or the grass snake. These animals, timid by nature, prefer to flee rather than attack. Their presence is an indicator of the rich local biodiversity and the good environmental health of our plots. Indeed, an environment favourable to snakes is often a sign of the presence of varied prey and refuge habitats, such as piles of stones, hedges or woodland edges, which we strive to preserve and enrich.
Francis, our passionate winegrower and photographer, has managed to capture the furtive beauty of these animals, proving that they fit perfectly into the harmonious picture of our vineyards. Each image is a testament to the possible coexistence between agriculture and wildlife, a fundamental principle of our sustainable viticulture. Respecting these creatures, despite preconceived ideas, is an integral part of the integrated farming philosophy we implement. By letting them fulfil their ecological role, we strengthen the resilience of our terroir against various agronomic challenges.
Snakes such as the green whip snake (Hierophis viridiflavus) or the grass snake (Natrix natrix) are reptiles commonly observed in our Bordeaux vineyards. The green whip snake, which can reach up to 1.60 metres in length, is recognisable by its bright colouring, a mix of yellow and black, often dotted with green. The more discreet grass snake generally measures between 70 centimetres and 1.20 metres and is distinguished by a pale collar behind its head.
These species adopt a seasonal life cycle well suited to the vineyard environment. They are active from spring to autumn, during which time they hunt and reproduce, before going into hibernation during the winter. They can be observed basking in the sun on low walls or warm stones, ideal places for thermoregulation.
At Château Cazebonne, these snakes find their ideal habitat in the preserved areas of our plots: the hedges that border our vines, the grassy banks, the piles of stones, and the woodland edges constitute essential refuges for reproduction, hunting, and hibernation. These diverse habitats contribute to the biodiversity and resilience of our ecosystem.
Their ecological role is undeniable and beneficial to the vine. These natural predators feed mainly on rodents (field mice, voles) and insects, thus actively participating in the regulation of populations of these organisms that can harm young vines or crops. This natural regulation makes it possible to reduce the use of human interventions, perfectly aligning with our agroecological approach to viticulture. In this sense, the presence of snakes is a sign of a healthy vineyard, where the terroir is respected and natural balances are favoured.
This approach to respecting living things is also evident in our project to reintroduce forgotten grape varieties to the Bordeaux landscape, an initiative inspired by books such as "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" published by Éditions BBD by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne. This work to promote our heritage is made possible by the commitment of many enthusiasts who, by adopting our wines, support this vision of respectful and innovative viticulture. To discover the fruits of this philosophy and the richness of our cuvées, we invite you to visit the Cazebonne shop. And to deepen your knowledge of the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties, do not hesitate to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", an essential work for understanding our approach.
At Château Cazebonne, we are convinced that the balance of the ecosystem is the key to quality viticulture. This is why we work every day to preserve these animal and plant populations, which are essential to the vitality of our terroir. You can learn more about this approach by downloading the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes, and of course discover and support our work by visiting our online shop to savour our wines born from this philosophy.
