Robin

The European Robin, melodious sentinel of the vines

The European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is a regular and cherished guest in the vineyards of Château Cazebonne. This bird, recognisable by its bright orange breast and plump silhouette, is a gentle and unassuming presence that brings the estate to life with its song.

Rather small, the Robin measures around 12.5 to 14 cm with a wingspan of 20 to 22 cm. Its plumage is mostly olive-brown on its back, contrasting sharply with its famous bright red breast that extends from its forehead to its chest. Male and female have identical plumage. The young, before their first moult, are entirely streaked with brown and beige, lacking the characteristic red breast. This bird is also distinguished by its large black eyes, giving it an attentive and curious expression.

Present all year round at Château Cazebonne, the Robin is particularly noticeable in spring and autumn. From dawn, its clear and melancholic song echoes through the vine rows, marking the start of the day. It is less visible in summer, during the flowering and nesting period. In winter, some individuals are sedentary, while others migrate south to escape the cold, sometimes giving way to their counterparts arriving from northern Europe.

At Cazebonne, the Robin favours areas rich in low vegetation and undergrowth. It can easily be observed in the hedgerows bordering our plots, as well as in the grassy areas and forest edges. It discreetly builds its nest in cavities (at the base of a shrub, in a hole in a wall, or sometimes even in abandoned objects), often hidden behind a curtain of leaves or roots.

Its ecological role in the vineyard is beneficial. Primarily insectivorous, it feeds on a wide variety of small invertebrates: caterpillars, spiders, beetles and other insects. This diet makes it a valuable ally in the natural regulation of potential vine pest populations. By limiting the proliferation of these species, the Robin contributes to a more respectful viticulture, thereby reducing the need for treatments and promoting biodiversity. Its presence is an excellent indicator of the good ecological health of our vineyard ecosystem.

The Robin does not interact directly with the vines in a harmful way. It feeds on harmful or neutral insects and very rarely shows interest in the grape berries. Its main interaction is therefore positive, acting as a natural regulator. We observe it daily foraging between the vines, hopping along the rows in search of food. The winegrower's work at Cazebonne, focused on agroecology, also aims to maintain a favourable environment for these birds and many other species. Other birds, such as the Starling or the wagtail, also share our vines, contributing to the richness of our local wildlife.

At Château Cazebonne, the constant presence of the Robin is a testament to our commitment to a viticulture where biodiversity is not only preserved but also encouraged. This work, which aims to revive the ancient grape varieties of Bordeaux, is inseparable from the environment that hosts them. By replanting grape varieties like Castets, Mancin or Saint-Macaire, we are breathing new life into an exceptional viticultural heritage. This approach is made possible thanks to the support of enthusiasts who adopt our wines, and for whom we have created a platform to explore the history of these lost grape varieties: you can download our book "Bordeaux, a history of grape varieties", test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes, or simply discover our vintages on our online shop.
