I want itAbouriou

Abouriou is an iconic red grape variety from the South-West of France, particularly prized in the Marmandais where it shapes the identity of AOC wines. However, its historical presence and exact distribution in the Bordeaux vineyard remain more enigmatic than for other varieties. While Abouriou does not feature among the major grape varieties recorded in ancient pre-phylloxera archives of Graves or the Médoc, geographical proximity to the Marmandais and the ancestral circulation of plant material mean its presence, even if anecdotal, in the border areas of the Gironde cannot be ruled out.
It is likely that Bordeaux winegrowers of the era favoured other grape varieties deemed better suited to their terroirs and commercial requirements, notably for export to England. Competition with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, already well established and renowned for their quality, may have curtailed its development in Bordeaux. Abouriou is therefore an interesting example of those regional grape varieties whose history and ampelographic destiny were shaped by geographical, economic, and cultural factors. This clearly illustrates the rationale behind the abandonment of certain grape varieties due to limited renown and distribution, as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne explains in his book Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages (Source 3).

At present, Abouriou is not authorised in the main Bordeaux appellations. At Château Cazebonne, our replanting approach focuses strictly on forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties with a proven, documented history in Bordeaux. Abouriou is therefore not part of our current programme, which aims to revive part of the local genetic heritage right in its native cradle. Nevertheless, studying grape varieties such as Abouriou aligns fully with our philosophy of rediscovering regional ampelographic heritage and reflecting on the future of Bordeaux in the 21st century. Understanding why certain grape varieties thrived while others were abandoned is an integral part of our historical work. For another ampelographic enigma such as Camaraou: an important Pyrenean relative for Bordeaux, we invite you to read our dedicated article. This quest for meaning guides our decisions and reinforces our commitment to sustainable viticulture that respects both history and biodiversity.
It is thanks to the support of many curious and passionate wine enthusiasts that Château Cazebonne can pursue this ambitious mission of reviving forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties. To deepen your knowledge of this fascinating history, Jean-Baptiste Duquesne has published the book Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages. If you would like to receive the digital edition by email and learn more about the specific characteristics of each variety, you can download our book on ancient grape varieties. You can also test your knowledge and learn more about wine and grape varieties with our wine quizzes. Finally, to explore the fruition of this approach and taste our cuvées crafted from these rediscovered varieties, we invite you to discover our wines online.
