In the heart of the Graves appellation, Château Cazebonne flourishes on a terroir of rare distinction: the "Cazebonne gravel ridge". This geological rise, which gently contours the Bordeaux landscape, is no coincidence. Its formation dates back millions of years, shaped by tectonic movements and successive alluvial deposits from rivers and the ocean.
A complex geology suited to fine wine
The Cazebonne gravel ridge is characterised by a mosaic of soils. There is a predominance of Günzian gravels—those Cazebonne pebbles that provide the soil with excellent drainage, forcing the vines to plunge their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. Yet these gravels do not stand alone: clays, sands, and silts punctuate this substrate, each lending their contribution to the aromatic complexity of the future wines.
This diversity allows for the optimal expression of various grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon finds the ideal soil here to develop its tannic structure and blackcurrant notes, whilst Merlot flourishes on the clay-rich parcels, delivering roundness and fruitiness. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot harmoniously complete this picture, each bringing their distinctive touch. The magic then happens during the blending of the wines, where these varieties marry to create the balance and complexity unique to Cazebonne wines.
A beneficial microclimate
Beyond its geological composition, the ridge benefits from an advantageous microclimate. Its gentle elevation protects the vines from spring frosts, whilst its optimal sun exposure fosters a slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The proximity of the Garonne also exerts a moderating influence on temperatures, helping to mitigate episodes of hydric stress.
All these elements—geology, exposure, microclimate—converge to make the Cazebonne gravel ridge an exceptional terroir. It is here, on these blessed parcels, that the grapes acquire the concentration and finesse that underpin the greatness of Château Cazebonne wines—wines that tell the story of their land. This typicity is further enriched by our discoveries of grape varieties from elsewhere, and our expertise in spur pruning is crucial for the healthy development of the vine. Finally, to complete this story, the design and selection of the Cazebonne labels capture the identity of each vintage. Come and discover this heritage during a wine tour in the Graves.
