Lemon balm, a nectar-rich aromatic plant for biodiversity

Botanical identification and naming of lemon balm

Lemon balm, known scientifically as Melissa officinalis, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is also sometimes colloquially referred to as "citronella", although this name can refer to other plants as well. Its name "Melissa" derives from ancient Greek, meaning "honeybee", highlighting its strong attraction for pollinating insects.

Description and visual characteristics

This plant is distinguished by its bushy habit, typically reaching between 30 and 80 centimetres in height. Its bright green leaves are ovate, toothed, and emit a characteristic lemony fragrance when crushed. They grow in opposite pairs and are rough to the touch. Its small flowers, often white or pale pink, appear in discreet clusters in the leaf axils. The plant as a whole has a dense, bushy appearance. Its flowering attracts numerous insects, thereby helping to promote biodiversity within the vineyard.

Life cycle and seasonality in the vineyard

Lemon balm is a hardy perennial that integrates seamlessly into the vineyard ecosystem. Its growth cycle begins in spring, with the emergence of its first shoots as soon as temperatures warm up. Flowering generally takes place between June and September, a period during which it provides a valuable resource for bees and other pollinators. Its presence can be an asset in managing cover cropping between the vine rows, fostering a living, diverse soil. After flowering, lemon balm persists until the first frosts, when its aerial parts die back before returning the following spring. It is relatively easy to cultivate and requires little maintenance, making it a natural ally in an agroecological approach to sustainable viticulture, much like other aromatic herbs such as mint in the vineyards.

Château Cazebonne is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity, not only through its heritage grape varieties but also by integrating plants like lemon balm into its surroundings.
