I want itThe Oscar Oc initiative represents a crucial step in the recognition of Bouquet varieties, the fruit of 35 years of research by the scientist Alain Bouquet. Launched in 2018 in Occitanie, this experimental programme played a pivotal role in gathering agronomic and oenological data, confirming the potential of these grape varieties. In doing so, it laid the foundations for their definitive classification, offering winegrowers promising solutions for sustainable viticulture.
The Oscar Oc network was initiated and co-managed by the CIVL (Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Languedoc) for the Languedoc-Roussillon basin and the IVSO (Institut des Vins de la Nouvelle-Aquitaine Sud-Ouest) for the South-West region. This interprofessional collaboration enabled a rigorous, long-term evaluation of Bouquet varieties across diverse terroir and climatic conditions. The objective was to collect extensive data to validate their performance and their alignment with the expectations of regional wine industries facing environmental and climate challenges.
Since its launch in 2018, Oscar Oc has followed a precise schedule to guide Bouquet varieties towards official recognition. This work confirmed their genetic, agronomic, and qualitative proximity to Vitis vinifera varieties, setting them apart from older hybrids. The data collected, particularly during annual tasting panels, highlighted the compelling sensory profiles of these new crossings, such as Bouquet 3159, renowned for its fine, balanced wines, or Bouquet 3196-57 (G9), prized for its citrus notes and potential for lower-alcohol wines. In 2025, this work is set to lead to the definitive classification of five Bouquet varieties, making them accessible to all winegrowers without quotas or regulatory constraints.
Evaluations conducted under Oscar Oc have demonstrated the significant value of Bouquet varieties for modern viticulture. Their resistance to powdery and downy mildew, inherited from a unique breeding programme developed by Alain Bouquet, substantially reduces the need for plant protection treatments. This programme has thus validated the relevance of these varieties within strategies for adapting to climate change and meeting the growing demand for sustainable, environmentally respectful viticulture. Château Cazebonne, dedicated to preserving Bordeaux's forgotten grape varieties, welcomes these initiatives that are shaping the future of the vineyard.
Château Cazebonne is part of this pioneering approach by replanting grape varieties that had almost disappeared from the Bordeaux vineyard. This meticulous work is made possible thanks to the support of wine lovers who have embraced our wines and our philosophy.
