Biodynamics is a holistic agricultural philosophy, developed by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century, which considers the farm as a living, self-sustaining organism. It aims to create a balanced ecosystem where the soil, plants, animals and human beings interact harmoniously. Beyond simply banning synthetic chemicals, biodynamics is based on a profound understanding of natural rhythms – cosmic and terrestrial – and uses specific preparations to dynamise soil life and strengthen plant vitality. This commitment promotes rich biodiversity and increased resilience in the vineyard, as evidenced by the approach of Château Cazebonne, a Bordeaux estate committed to this demanding path.
Biodynamic practices integrate the careful observation of living things, crop rotation, the use of prepared composts and the spraying of dynamised preparations in homeopathic doses. They seek to restore the natural fertility of the soil and stimulate its regenerative processes, so that the vine can draw fully from its terroir and express all its authenticity. This respect for the life cycle and natural forces contributes to the general balance of the vineyard and the production of high-quality wines that faithfully reflect their origin.
Biodynamic preparations are the heart of the method. There are nine of them, numbered from 500 to 508, and they are used to revitalise soils and plants. Each has a specific role: the horn manure (500) and horn silica (501) preparations are the most fundamental, acting on soil vitality and plant quality respectively. The other preparations (502 to 507), made from medicinal plants (yarrow, chamomile, nettle, oak bark, dandelion, valerian), are incorporated into the compost to enhance its qualities and stimulate specific processes within the earth. The dynamisation of these preparations, through vigorous stirring in water, is a key step that allows an intense vital force to be infused before their application on the vine and the soil.
At Château Cazebonne, Preparation 500, more commonly known as "horn manure", is much more than an agricultural technique; it is the central pillar of our biodynamic approach, the heartbeat of our living soils. This fundamental preparation plays a crucial role in dynamising microbial life and structurally enriching our terroir. It symbolises our deep commitment to the natural balance and vitality of our vines.
In practical terms, Preparation 500 is made from high-quality cow manure, which we pack into a cow horn and leave to mature over the winter, buried deep in the earth. This process, guided by cosmic rhythms, allows for the accumulation of intense vital force. Once ready, this preparation is dynamised in water, creating a vortex that breathes energy and coherence before being sprayed in small doses onto the soil of our plots. Far from being a simple amendment, it acts as a biological stimulator, promoting the formation of stable humus, improving soil porosity and stimulating the activity of earthworms and micro-organisms, which are essential to the health of the vine.
The effect of Preparation 500 is a true renaissance for the soil. It activates life in the subsoil, making nutrients more accessible to the roots and strengthening the vine's natural capacity to resist diseases and climatic stress. It is what deeply roots our vines, allowing them to draw the very essence of their terroir and fully express its minerality and aromatic complexity. This soil vitality, passed on to the plant, is then reflected in the quality and authenticity of our wines.
Preparation 500 is at the heart of our viticultural approach, part of an overall philosophy of biodynamic viticulture at Château Cazebonne. By using it and combining it with other respectful practices such as cover cropping, organic matter management, or the application of all the other preparations (501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, 507, and 508), we work towards a healthy and resilient ecosystem. This commitment to respectful viticulture, guided by biodynamics and the use of Preparation 500, also allows us to carry out a project that is particularly close to our hearts: the replanting of forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux. This work to preserve our ampelographic heritage, which is essential for the diversity and resilience of our vineyard, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne points out in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", rediscovering and reintroducing these old varieties is crucial for the future of the appellation, offering new aromatic palettes and better adaptation to climatic challenges.
Our biodynamic cuvées are a reflection of this philosophy, wines that tell the story of their terroir and authentically express the richness of their origin. Each bottle is the fruit of respectful work, guided by the conviction that nature, when listened to and honoured, offers the best of itself.
To deepen your knowledge of the history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", published by Éditions BBD and written by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne.
